PVC sleeping platform in a 2010 Xterra X

It's been awhile since I've been active here. Things have changed. Jeep is gone and I bought a nice used BMW R1200GS. One kid is out of college and one is out of high school. I picked up a 2010 Xterra X as an inexpensive daily driver, and wouldn't you know it there's room to sleep in the back on...

    The Big Meander, Summer 2011

Colin, my son, wanted to go back to Moab and run some trails in the Jeep. With that thought (and not much else) in our heads, and a couple weeks' time on our hands we headed West. It was actually cool enough to just leave the windows open.. At the end of Day 1 we parked it in a KOA...

Warn 8274 - Rated for Synthetic?

Is the Warn 8274 rated for synthetic? It's not a big deal to me either way, but if synthetic is copacetic, then I might go that route. Another thread brought up this question in relation to another winch, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.. Thanks. John

Ancient Warn 8274 - What can I expect to fix?

I am having a Warn bumper installed on my JK Unlimited next week, and plan to mount my ancient 8274 winch that's been sitting for 20 years in the garage to it. The winch saw some use, but not much, back in the day and was retired in fine working condition when the CJ-7 went to the salvage yard...

    Big Bend, Thanksgiving week 2010

So I get funny looks Friday morning getting out of the Jeep at work.. Little do they know (although some surely suspect) I've got plans.. It's kind of chilly and not exactly perfect weather to be hauling the bike around.. Of course, the Noon hour approaches and I just can't take it...

    Rally Mongolia 2010

Anybody keeping track of the ongoing Rally Mongolia 2010? Jonah Street is leading. Team mate Mike Shirley is a bit further back. Mike Buhler, of St. John's, Newfoundland, is near mid-pack in his first rally. He's Skibum69 on this site. http://www.sser.org/rm2010/index_e.html John

Fording the Cabot Strait - Car Camping in Newfoundland

Of course, between here (Indiana) and there (Newfoundland) is Nova Scotia. We've got family on Cape Breton, which is convenient in a couple of ways. Having worn a track in the asphalt with the KLR over the years, this time we took the dirt roads to the ancestral home at Mira.. First we went...

    Scarysharkface's Low-Budget Trailer Rehabilitation Build

A friend just gave me the frame from an old Bee-Line travel trailer. Frame looks pretty good for age and considering it's been sitting outside for 40+ years. Not including the bumper on the rear or the tongue, it measures: 6' 8-1/2" x 8' 8-1/2" What I'd like to do is build it enough to sleep...

Big Bend on 6 wheels over 2009 Christmas/New Year's break..

I have strung together a picture-heavy trip report over on advrider.com: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=538600 I hope you find it enjoyable. I'm still figuring this whole "having fun" thing out, and will keep at it. Diligence pays... :sombrero: John

JK - wipers stuck "on" after 3" lift

The wires to the wheels have slack and haven't been pulled (that I'm aware of), but the ESP light occasionally blinks and now my wipers won't turn off. What is going on? Thanks, John

Which cheap ~2" lift for '09 JK Unlimited?

I want a little extra clearance to compensate a bit for the longer wheelbase, but don't have much $$$ to spend (i.e. I'm very nearly broke, but not quite). Is there a significant difference between the spring-spacer lift kits, or are they all simply variations on a theme? I know I'll need...

    Harbor Freight Trailer?

How are the Harbor Freight trailers as a starting point for a light and inexpensive expo trailer? I am curious about either of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=92174 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=90154 How difficult is...

IN to UT, AZ, CO in a stock JK Unlimited

For the last few years my vacations have been sans family, on the KLR in the Canadian Maritimes. Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and last Summer Labrador.. I've made some great friends, connected with family I hadn't seen in decades and look forward to my next opportunity to visit...

1979 Jeep (Warn) 8000 lb winch questions

I've got the winch off my Dad's old '79 CJ-7. It's a Jeep-branded Warn 8000 lb pull unit. Does anyone know anything about these things? It's been sitting in his garage since '81 or so, out of the weather but has some corrosion. If it's worth it, I wouldn't mind mounting it on my '09 Wrangler...
