Thoughts on overall height of your set up. How tall is too tall for the backcountry?

We sit at 10'3" and spend 90+% of our time in the PNW. In the past 10+ years with this setup, only a handful of times was height a problem. In those instances, only once did it result in turning around. The others, it was simply a matter of ratchet strapping a limb out of the way, or cutting...

    Expo Vehicle MPG

Actually I did. Regardless of what you want to believe, all of this is a compromise. Hence the "meh who cares" <--- your words mentality. While at face value it seems short minded, it is anything but. And with regards to gasser vs diesel fuel consumption and emissions, the entire thing is...

    Expo Vehicle MPG

Different strokes for different folks, but if MPG is a legitimate driving force, then overall COST really is. There are plenty of ways to manage cost, but MPG is likely one of the last things to consider, unless you are comparing a Westfalia to an Earthroamer. Personally, we sided with simple...

In bed tank AUX gasoline gravity fed opinions?

Our aux tank has its own fuel filler and also has the ability to transfer from aux to main in motion, simply by pumping into the main tanks filler neck. I also added a fuel switch that allows you to transfer fuel via a fuel filler from aux tank to gas can or other vehicle. The truck is a...

In bed tank AUX gasoline gravity fed opinions?

FYI, due to safety, gravity feeding gas is illegal. Still A-okay for diesel though, but may vary based upon location. You can run an aux tank for gas, but it must be pumped, not gravity fed.

Good indoor/outdoor 2 sensor thermometer for truck camper?

We have been running this "3-channel" unit for years. 3 transmitters plus the base and you have 4 readings I have one sensor in the freezer, one in the fridge, and one outside. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JGRBZBB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

HIgh-way and Light off-road tire recommendation

I cannot say enough good things about the Toyo AT2 We have near 40k on this set, and if I wasnt worried about winter traction, would easily get 50k out of them. As well as these have done, Im more than thrilled to step into a set of the new AT3 when its time. Stable, predicable, dont chunk on...

heavy steel bumper vs oem bumper damage

Personally, for front bumpers its all about safety and the ability to take a hit and still get home. And around here animal strikes are far more of a concern than anything. So it needs to be engineered with factory crumple zones and air bag sensors in mind. It also needs to protect the front...

Hierarchy of hard sided campers that handle the snow/winter?

I can understand the sentiment that the higher R-value the better. But my research and 12+ years of first hand experience shows that the benefits must be weighed with the negatives. Our custom camper with just R7 or so and nothing more than a 1960's gravity fed LP furnace rated at just 6kBTU...

    NPS fines AWD owners…

When I see legislative changes like these I look at them as final efforts to keep dumb people from doing dumb things. Unfortunately, the next step could easily be partial or complete closure of problem areas. Regardless of how things ate defined or how informed LEOs are, its always easier and...

Which synthetic winch line for a large vehicle?

With regards to Warns "Spydura Pro", considering the oddities in their listings, I would love to see an actual spec sheet for these ropes. 7/16x100 and 3/8x100 both rated for 16,500 Until you get to the extensions.... then the 7/16 x 50 is rated at 18k, and the 3/8 is rated for just 12k...

Which synthetic winch line for a large vehicle?

Those are minimum BREAK strength. NOT working load limit strength numbers. I for one, would not place much faith on 3/8 working reliably on a 15k+ winch, considering its working load limit is just 4400lbs Generally, 7/16 synthetic is considered standard for 10k - 15k winches. Beyond that, Id...

Crew cab long bed (8ft) for overlanding??? Is this viable or realistic?

Really is going to depend upon your use case. For us, I feel this is the absolute minimum for a full time, true 4-season setup. No way, no how would a short box/bed work for us.

    The Heap. A Gen 2 Tracker/Vitara Build

This setup will include extra bulbs in the tail light housings. No silly diodes, factory harness wont be effected. And zero concern about failure on the tow rig brake system side. One large reason to go with proper gear, and not junk.

    The Heap. A Gen 2 Tracker/Vitara Build

Believe me, I went back and forth with that for quite some time. And to be truthful, I still consider it. But at the end of the day, flat towing is less complex in many ways than worrying about another item like a trailer. And flat towing puts exactly zero tongue weight on the hitch of an...

    The Heap. A Gen 2 Tracker/Vitara Build

So a while back I went down the rabbit hole with regards to supplemental braking systems. Looking at various options, they all seemed similar, and I thought I had it sorted. Until I realized that essentially none of them were progressive. Instead, ON-OFF, with calibration for max braking...
