    JK/JL Jeep Camper Concept

Scrolling to the top, I noticed that my first post about this project was 3 years ago today. I had been sketching the jeep camper layout since we sold our Unimog in 2019, but I really got into the design details in December 2021. It’s been a ton of work, but it’s been so satisfying. Thanks for...

    JK/JL Jeep Camper Concept

Yvonne and I are super happy with the little jeep camper, and despite having COVID last month and having to take care of some adulting things this summer, we’ve been able to have several very nice trips in the camper recently. We had planned on heading up into Canada this summer, but our plans...

It’s really cool to see them side-by-side like that. The Outpost II was clearly a big inspiration for doing this whole project in the first place, and Dave Harriton was really helpful along the way. The Outpost II is such a nice vehicle.

There are so many pros and cons to each option. So far, I really like the simplicity of the front hinge wedge that we have, but clearly, a vertical pop-top would have give us way more space. I guess the euro style hinge is kind of a nice compromise between the other two.

@mog, that feels like a long time ago when we swapped the original habitat off our Mog and put it on your truck. I guess that was ~6.5 years ago now? You still have that habitat on our Kodiak, right? It’s funny how small and oddly proportioned our Unimog looked before we put the new habitat...

It really is silly how visually low I ended up having to mount the awning on the habitat wall to make it work right. I always thought it looked a little odd. When I was picking the mounting location, I emailed ARB, explained what I was doing, sent them this CAD side graphic, and asked what the...

Thanks @mog. Yvonne and I are really liking the new camper, and we are looking forward to upcoming trips. I was a bit surprised to see our trusty old Unimog go up for sale again a few days ago, but I had a long phone call with the current owner a few months back, and got the feeling that it...

Yup, I totally considered a euro style pop top. I think they can be really nice. I also considered a side hinged setup, a flip top, and a full vertical lift configuration. I think they all would be good on this camper in their own way, but in the end, the front hinged wedge was very lightweight...

    Post Pic's of your Jeep

Finally getting our new JLU camper out on a nice trip last week.

Thank you very much. It sure was a lot of work; we look forward to taking it on adventures now. It was great to just take it out of for a week.

I’ve chatted with Enduro periodically over the last few years, and Yvonne and I got to take a really good look at the Enduro box on the Land Cruiser at Expo West. It’s a super nice camper, and I think it is worth that price to the right traveler. They did a great job on that camper for sure and...

    JK/JL Jeep Camper Concept

It’s a soft type of foam gym mat (the stuff that fits together like a puzzle). Yvonne and I thought that the blue color might brighten up the otherwise black/gray/white interior a little. It’s really comfortable, lightweight, and it makes the habitat feel quiet and warm. We might need to replace...

    JK/JL Jeep Camper Concept

Ha, that's funny :) I have had a ton of email requests lately asking if I will make more of these, and a bunch of people at Expo West asked if I would consider starting a business making them. In a way it would be fun to make more, but my head spins just thinking about the logistics of doing it...

Thanks. It was nice to hit the road for the last week and just enjoy it. It was really comfortable for Yvonne and I, and everything worked quite well. It's a nice setup for us.

    JK/JL Jeep Camper Concept

The last two weeks have been a bit of a blur in the shop with a ton of progress. Long story short: the Jeep camper is done! The last two big things that I finished were the water system and the new lightweight carbon fiber bed platform. The interior has a really nice feel with a “daytime mode"...

Floor to ceiling, the wedge is 7'3" tall in the back and 4'10" tall at the very front. I am 6'2" and I can easily stand right in the middle of the camper. My wife is 5'7" and can walk substantially further forward than I can. There is a ton of head clearance all around the kitchen with the top...

Getting it dirty is the plan. Hopefully it will see some dirt in the next few weeks. It's time to start testing things out with some longer trips.

Thanks. It really is a lot packed into the kitchen, but I think it's a functional space and it's pretty light. Thanks for the recommendations on the Sailrite materials. I pretty much ordered exactly what you had in your list and it was all great. I liked working with the basting tape.
