How do you think the unit would do mounted semi-permanently beneath a solar panel on the roof? Any other vehicle mounting ideas? Or is this something best set out when used and then stored inside when done?

So I ended up going with a Rugged Ridge cowl mount, but attached to the solar panel mount on top. Just have to find some time to play with it now.

UMV now offers longer rails, I believe, but I had the extended Thule rails installed by Rack Attack in Santa Monica.

Thanks for the info, Dan. I’ve got a HAM buddy helping me with the install. I’m sure he’ll steer me the right way, but I’m trying to anticipate needs before the install.

Radio is a Midland MXT500 and comes with a 16” 2.1dB antenna on a magnetic mount. I added a 3dB Ghost antenna to the order. If I want/need to upgrade, what’s the do-all/be-all antenna to add to the kit?

Thanks. That’s what I understood, but I wondered how much of a real-world difference I would experience. I’m thinking of coming off the right rear mount of the solar panel as my highest point, but the wire will run alongside the solar cables. Problem?

Have you had much interference or loss of range due to it being mounted lower?

You’re correct, they’re polyester. They are button-down, though.

After realizing I would likely be unable to open the rear cargo deck, I went a different direction. Instead of getting a roof net, I got a 4’ x 4’ cargo net to hold the gear in my rear seat and rear footwells from flying around. It clips to the rear headrests and the front seat mounts.
