I ordered shocks for it, since these are blown (I went with the 4600's, for now)... Also ordered the revised crank shaft bolt from ADD. I'm ordering the belt and tensioner (OEM. I learned from my DSM days) and the pump (was debating on OEM). I just need to convert cash to debit to get the $ in...

Me too. My budget is $3000 all in for the time being. That's why I was looking around $2500 mark, because I figure even on those rigs comes a few hundred in maintenance. Good news is, I'm keeping a spreadsheet of all purchases... Keeping a loose archive of time invested. What years is yours?

https://drive.google.com/file/d/12nwds4rV1OmxgZvNBABpYzDR8RkmEn3D/view?usp=sharing I kept getting an upload error this morning when I was trying to attach the photo. But, I took the Montero home for $1000. Guess it's time to start a new thread for the building process. I've already torn out the...

Well, I didn't expect a show room condition SR. I don't mind putting in the work, but it was advertised a little misleadingly. I still want it. I just couldn't do $1300 for something that leaked that badly... I actually still want it, because some TLC would go a long way with this thing...

Well, sad to report that I was unable to go Full Monty this weekend. :-( I looked at the rig, and it was just too rough for the price. Going to have to get on the waiting list... Fighting the urge to get a temporary vehicle while searching for the perfect one.

You rock too plh. I haven't seen this stuff spelled out about the year quite so nicely. And not for lack of searching, but probably more incorrect search terms. From the look of it, it sounds like a 97 wouldn't be terrible if I plan on going in and doing the 4.9 gearing from the Montero...

Hi jeep-n-montero, It's hard to say I'm not in a rush to get something sooner than later... I've been searching CL for a while (past 2 months or so while decided to build the Sidekick, or sell it) and having a hard time finding anything other than a 95. I'm not really "patient" when it comes to...

Coffeegoat, You changed my life sir! That was such a great read. I love how passionate and knowledgeable the Adventure Driven Designs guys are. This article pretty much confirmed everything I've read about the Monteros. I think these are the right vehicles to restore and take my sons on...

some interesting monteros on portland/ seattle craigsist this week

I was just looking at the 97 w/141k debating if I should get that over a 97SR! Those miles are low, and that interior looks great for it's age... I was in the middle of trying to find the gearing information..

Hi plh, Thanks for the information. Maybe OBD2 should be changed to a "preferred." That's a pretty big gearing difference. I see a lot of mixed reviews on if that'll turn 33's on the highway with an incline? Ultimately I'd like to probably go with 35's, but I would probably aim for the 4.9...

Hi guys, I've been working on building a trail rig for a while. My priority is usually "get the thing to factory specs for reliability BEFORE modding the crap out of it." This particular function has proven to be a huge money pit in my current 97 4 door Suzuki Sidekick. I spend a lot on initial...
