New Scout Electric SUV from VW

The main reason is International Harvester is still a real company, and Scout Motors has absolutely no association with IH. They bought the rights to the Scout name and they are a startup just like Rivian. VW is a corporate investor, and they have a joint venture with them.

Most reliable US spec Land Rover?

My 2017 Discovery 5 HSE Td6 has been rock solid. I lost all of my money on my extended warranty - I've never used it. I now have about 85k miles on it. It was one of the earliest ones delivered in the States. Mechanically, US / NAS L494 and L462's seem to be consistently well behaved. Early on...

Colorado Adventures - Grand Mesa and Paradise Basin (Near Crested Butte)

Best part of Colorado, in my opinion. Great trip report! We hiked from above Devil's Punchbowl down to Crystal Mill a couple falls ago - wasn't sure our D5 could squeeze through a couple spots, and there was a TON of vehicle and moto traffic, with drivers who were less than patient with each...

New To Us D5: Impressions and Comparisons to LR3

I love my D5 HSE Td6. I will drive it until the wheels fall off. Speaking of wheels, get yourself a set of Compomotive PD 1881 18" wheels (double check fitment...LR did some wonky things with the rear brakes in the first couple model years...the calipers are different with different clearance...

    Oops

Mine is a 2017 with around 90K miles on it...and I've had almost zero maintenance expenses aside from scheduled service, and a couple warranty repairs that were done without issue. Not routinely off-roading in extreme conditions - but I giv'er when I do. Might add one of these to the kit, and...

    budget performance cars

I had a 2001 A4 2.8 Avant Quattro Sport 5MT and I loved that thing. Everything RS4 but the engine and brakes. I wanted an S4 but alas, they were a bit out of my reach....

    budget performance cars

I was --> <-- this close to buying a 2012 Aston Martin V8 Vantage that was on BaT that ended up going for ~$25,000. It had 80K miles on it, and the video showed it drove very well. Astons are to me the most desirable GT vehicles, full stop. Well sorted ones that get driven, as this one had...

    L494 RRS onboard air

This is awesome. You should license this design to the aftermarket distributors - the Discovery 5 has a similar unused space. If you built the plate and pre-cut the lines, everything looks like it would be fairly easy to install.

    New Defender News

So...somehow, a V8 is more emissions compliant than a MHEV straight-6??? What bizarro world are we living in? Wish we could get the D350 here in the US. That would get me to replace my D5 Td6 with a Defender. Those numbers are ideal for a mid-sized SUV built for offroading and long-distance...

    Revealed: Range Rover EV

This is the right vehicle to electrify within the Land Rover portfolio. This will attract buyers who were considering an R1S or otherwise waiting for an electrified Cayenne or Bentley.

    New Defender News

MOAH POWAH is great and all, but honestly, I'd prefer it if they released a V8 turbodiesel with 400hp and 600lb-ft+ of torque for this vehicle, with electric turbos. Or even uprate the I-6 D300 with an electric supercharger and electric turbo with the MHEV KERS... Logically that power in a gas...

Is this why JLR are dropping Land Rover?

Hate to break it to you, it's been this way since the late 1990s. Land Rovers were always expensive, rare, and of those that sold in meaningful numbers, well-appointed.

Is this why JLR are dropping Land Rover?

JLR are not dropping Land Rover. JLR is the brand; they are differentiating between Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover as sub-brands, and then simplifying model ranges within. You will still get a green oval and the words LAND ROVER on your vehicles.

when is it time to move on.

Portals are cool, but with air and independent suspension, do you really need them? They cost a lot in terms of efficiency and maintenance for frankly little gain in ground clearance on the new D7 architecture. The bottoms are flat anyway, no pumpkins, so raising the suspension on subframe lifts...

when is it time to move on.

TR2 and the low range gearbox are essentials IMO, but a locking rear diff isn't unless you plan on towing in deep snow or mud. Low range is good for the steep rocky/loose stuff (think San Juans/Ouray area or Mosca Pass), and the diesel plus Low Range makes it almost effortless. Red Noland JLR...

    No commentary needed....

Wow, I came here to mention that I saw one in Colorado Springs just the other day, and it looked cool, but dayum....this is worse than a Land Rover thread. But, people wanted a classic Defender clone, so....

when is it time to move on.

Can't emphasize enough that the key to any diesel engine's longevity is to drive it hard but take it easy. Long highway trips and offroad in low range - the stop-and-go will kill it. Source a diesel from the Western US except for LA or the Bay Area.

when is it time to move on.

My 2017 D5 Td6 has been utterly rock solid - I will drive it until the wheels fall off. 18" Compomotive wheels, 70-series tires, and Lucky8 rock sliders and she goes anywhere I point her. Can't beat the torque for offroading above 10,000 feet in Colorado. And 500 mile range on the Interstate...

In Praise of the Humble Rental Car

Rental cars are widely regarded as the fastest cars in the world. Once rally'd a late-90's Chevy Cavalier up Pike's Peak (when it was gravel), and liberally used parking-brake slides around corners on the downhill.
