Ok so second update…. Didn’t know that broken cv axles could reseat themselves and work fine. So after new trans and rear dif I finally found the last bit of issues with my rear end. And that was finishing up my cv axles. No more noise and now on to the next issue that pops up ha.
UPDATE!!
Rear dif is replaced and was probably the problem. Also it had been swapped to the 4.3 rear end at some point. Now just need to settle it in and see if the shakes come back. But I’m pretty certain it was the diff. When putting into gear it would clank. Now it doesn’t. Speedo is dead on...
Well I took it out for a spin and the knocking sound came back. I’m about 95% sure it the rear dif. Unless anyone else can figure out why when I lift up the rear all issues go away until things settle down. Usually about 3-6 miles. Issues like feeling like having a blow out until letting off the...
The rear end never did it before I had trouble with my transmission and all the other stuff that happened to it. Drove it around after changing the fluid and it stopped chirping. Looking for a new rear end. Just a hard part to find that isn’t in a junked out Xls with unknown miles on it
Changed the rear dif fluids and truck has been sitting over night. Nothing new leaking but i wasn’t able to really get under and clean off any of the grease and dirt on there to see if anything new was leaking. The rear tires don’t chirp when turning now and it got up to speed and didn’t hear...
Ok so update on my rig. Trans went in but still have weird clanging noise from the rear end. So it’s no longer a transmission issue. Still trying to diagnose the problem. Again after jacking up my car the sound and vibrations go away for a few days as the car settles for lack of a better term...
Thanks. I’m going to get the set that’s listed on rock auto. I prefer to do things right the first time. But then I get lazy and half ass things. Don’t wanna deal with spending more trying to do it cheaper. Thanks for the info
First:Trans is on the way. Miles are a bit high at 150k but with a 6 month warrenty and only 450 bucks from LKQ that buys me some time to have the original one rebuilt. I’d love to be able to do the work myself and post pictures of me drinking beers and never getting anything done but I work on...
I’m in Bakersfield California. Not many places here that will work on the Montero. If I can’t find a shop that will work on it, Ive been thinking since it will be awhile before I can get it running again I may just find some info on how to rebuild the transmission and rear diff and just do it...
This isn’t my truck but has the same set up. So I assume this is the 4speed with manual transfer case. Forgive me as im not that well versed on my truck yet
Thanks for the info. I couldn’t find anything online, but I also just started looking. It’s the automatic with the manual transfer case, so I’m guessing it’s the 4 speed. The 04 at the wrecking yard has the manual transfer case also. He has a 02 but the transmission has already been removed. I...
Hey all I bought an ‘02 Montero xls 4x4 back in May. Before I could get to checking everything out properly my Trans and rear diff went out at the same time. Local wrecking yard has an ‘04 4x4. I know they are both gen 3’s but wrecking yard guy said 04 has two different trans and diffs so can’t...
