    Compact Camping/Toyhauler

I custom built this small, off road camping trailer about 1.5yrs ago. I took a 4'6" x 96" Snow Bear trailer, beefed up the tongue/frame with 1/4" x 4" steel angle, added a brand new 3,500lb axle and mounted Jeep Wheels/Tires on it with square fenders. (Has two spares wheels/tires) The exterior...

Cargo Trailer Rooftop Weight Capacity? Wildernest Mounted?

The ceiling rafters on those trailers are very lightweight and not made to hold much at all. In my opinion you would need to frame in a structure that is completely independent from the roof to support the tent. The good thing is the frame is plenty stout.

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

I was worried about cross winds too but it tows good in the wind even when empty. I think it's because its in the slip stream of my F350 so it would take some pretty good winds to get it swaying. With the wider, heavier axle it is even more stable now too. Should work about pretty good for...

    Backroad capable teardrop build

Looks great! How do you plan to build the roof structure? Just curious if you will be using steel instead of wood due to all the angles?

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Well, my POD is as done as it is going to get for now. I have to move next week and my rental house doesn't have much room to work so I am not sure how much more work I will be able to do on the POD. So for now it has 3 coats of elastomeric paint and 1 coat of semi-gloss acrylic to protect the...

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Well, summer has been crazy the past 6 weeks but I finally have a chance to update some of my progress. I took the POD out for it's maiden voyage two weeks ago and it did very well. However, it weighs more than I anticipated and I ended up being 200 pounds over my axle limit. Fortunately it...

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Thanks Pat! Made some stupid financial decisions about 5 years ago and they have caught up to me now, plus my wife lost her job last year; such is life.......just gotta keep pushing forward. At the rear door I think I am going to either store my folding ramps inside the trailer or weld some...

Just purchased a Military trailer to build a family hauler

Looks great! I would go with the three color camo too. Don't worry about your welding...mine look the same but they always hold! I never have been able to figure out how people can lay down such nice welds.

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Some more updates: I decided to ditch the ramp idea and go with the suggestions from Ozarker, Pat and my Wife! :) The back door is going lift up instead and will be supported by poles to provide a shaded area for eating, working on equipment etc. I built the frame with perimeter 1x3 and then...

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Made quite a bit of progress the past couple of days: Got the rear gussets in, VCT flooring in, angle braces welded on the front of my trailer, rubber roof installed and side doors cut out. I don't know if it has been mentioned on this site before but EPDM rubber can be purchased very costly...

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Made some good progress today. Got the underside plywood and skids installed and painted. The inside floor insulated, plywood installed and the entire exterior primed. Good news is I can still, just barely, move it around by myself. It did take me and my 15 year old son to flip it over so I...

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Ozarker, My trailer has detachable sides and ramps so that's why you don't see them in the picture. For the ramp I am trying to copy the basic design of a Wells Cargo car hauler: http://wellscargo.com/wellscargo-trailers/auto-trailers/# I by no means expect to match the strength or design...

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Gotcha, I already have some of those. I thought you were saying there was a company that pre-fabricated ramp DOORS. I think I am just going to cross laminate (2) sheets of 1/2' ACX and then design the door to cover the entire back of the trailer and clamp to the side walls. I believe that...

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Thanks for drawing that! I have some ideas spinning in my head now; I'll see what I can work up this weekend if there is time. The top of mine will be covered with 1/2" plywood, glued and screwed (inside & out) so that will gusset the header together very well. I did a search but didn't...

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

Got all the plywood on last night with the exception of the back ramp wall as I still haven't figure out how I am going to build that. My progress will probably slow down significantly from here as my wife and kids have my gone in the evenings all this week, but our normal schedule returns...

Really mini & removable toy hauler build

I think I am going to give that ABS sheeting a try, it comes in black and white and is a lot easier to fabricate than FRP. I will pick a sheet up tomorrow and post up some pics when I have it glued on. I am starting to get little concerned about the lateral strength of the rear ramp area...

Any opinions on using this for the siding (1/16").... http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=335& I used this material to make a spoiler for the back of my fiberglass canopy and it has proved to be very durable thus far. I am thinking this would work very wall as siding and the best...
