Those are a couple good things to consider. I haven't run into that kind of bear regulation (though I don't often camp in campgrounds). In the Sierras bears just rip off car doors or smash windows, but I know there are lots of regional differences regarding food storage in bear country.
And...
Good topic! Mine is hard-sided and soft-sided.
Link to the build is below.
Few thoughts from the above posts I'll echo having built a hard-side slide-up:
1) Slide-ups are complicated (i.e., a PITA to build for most of us)! Once it's working smoothly though, it is a very robust and...
For my canvas pop-up I sewed my own insulation using rip-stop nylon and 2-inch-thick Thinsulate. Goes on and off with velcro. Stuffs away into a small sack. Very noticeable improvement in heat retention.
I'd be curious to see the numbers you are using for your claim of 1/3 heavier. My research shows that they are very close in weight or lighter. Either way, factoring in cost, availability, strength, ease of construction, etc. is how I will be making a decision.
Out of curiosity, what do your...
That's definitely a viable approach. However, the cost of foam, adhesive and those FRP sheets is much higher I would bet. Also, need to make the panels which is more work. 1.5" honeycomb core with FRP faces is less than 1 lb per sq. ft. 1" foam board is like 0.15 lb per sq. ft. 1/8" luan for the...
I'm having the same challenge as the OP. My current thinking is to build the box with honeycomb core panels, which are lighter and stronger than foam-core panels and reasonably priced (including shipping) from Carbon Core. Insulation will then be added that is non-structural to achieve my...
I've been doing a lot of thinking and designing on just such a build on that very chassis. ~13' box I think. Gives tons of interior space on a very reasonably sized vehicle.
And I agree, not much out there for examples. I'd likely do a home build using composite panels but there is a TC...
It's the Sprinter cab chassis (or cutaway if you prefer). Only comes with DRW with AWD. Looks like they do a supersingle for the RWD model but tire diameters front and rear are a little different so not available with AWD.
Thanks for sharing, more good experience and perspective!
Didn't know about the ability to connect the duals to make one air up/down point - does sound worth looking into. Four rounds with the compressor sounds quicker than six.
One of the things I like about the platform I'm looking at is...
I believe on the Sprinter the rear track width is the same with SRW and DRW (or very close) so shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the X2 on the no bueno vote, appreciate all the input!
Thanks for those points - good ones. Interesting to hear different experience with rocks between the tires than some others so far. I wonder if in the course of that type of work you wound up on some pretty rough terrain compared to what I'd ever want to do.
Why is changing the inside tire so...
