Thinking the exact same thing. I would recommend going smaller and lighter. If you look, you can find some really nicely restored and kitted Samurai's out there that will tow very nicely and are a ideal little grocery getter.
If this sort of collectors thing interest you thats cool I'll keep my eye out for ya. However, If you plan on modifying it in any way I think you'd be wasting your hard earned cash.
Just run the T176 till it breaks - if it breaks. Some people can break parts pulling out of their garage, others have no issues ever.
What's wrong with the rear brake setup? If he followed the Zuki/Nissan rear brake thread on Pirate4x4 it should work fine. You might need to adjust the brake...
