Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

Just took my second Gen out for her first off-road camping trip near Death Valley and she did GREAT. Very impressed with how smooth she is. Only issue was in ice covered off camber trail, but everyone in the group had issues with the same. We had 2 people, 2 large dogs and too much camping gear...

Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

The 3.2 in the first Gen may be a GM motor swap. It was not uncommon to drop in the GM 3.2 when the 2.8 gave to many issues. They bolt onto the transmission, but about everything else will have to come over from the doner vehicle. If this is the case, make sure you know what you are buying so...

Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

I have to agree with the other poster.. My Trooper is always spinning out. Sometimes I spin it out going to the store, than I park it, and do some shopping, and when I come back out the darn thing has spun on its own in the parking lot. It is just crazy!! Unsafe at NO speed. Just kidding.

Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

Was going to say I was sipping a soda while cruising at 50 mph in my Trooper on nasty washboard today. The dogs in the back were happily sleeping after enjoying a fun day on the local trail. We didn't die or anything. LOL When I go to Moab I tend to see a lot of Isuzus, but I tend to go on the...

Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

I was thinking about your Trooper today.. LOL I'm thinking for a few hundred dollars more than this one might cost you, you may be able to get a much nicer example. heck, just a set of new tires could set you back $600 or so. A vehicle in better condition may cost a few hundred more, but...

Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

Hmm, I would go inspect the car. The ad does not say it is a runner. The non-registration for a "long time" is also very troubling, it may cost a LOT of money to register it in California. (I recall that after 7 years DMV waves the back registration, but double check for sure!) It shows signs of...

Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

SRN - Thanks for backing me up. :) I have 2 '99s and one of them spent some time in Colorado and has pretty bad rust on the underside, but the frame and other structural items all looks really good, but the bolts and little brackets and such are horrible. Maybe Isuzu treated the frames but not...

Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

I think you well do well with any generation that has not been neglected. Finding the older vehicles that have not been neglected is actually harder. I have what you are calling a third generation, and they are easier to find with lower miles and recent services. They do not have head gasket...

But then again, you can bolt on a 6" lift onto that Cherokee very easily, and it will flex so well it will go places without a locker that an locked IFS rig can't go. And you can buy a modified Cherokee with built axles for dirt cheap on a regular basis. I'm not a huge fan of the Cherokee, but...

Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

Cherokee is the best bang for the buck, and one of the most capable stock 4x4s, and get fair fuel economy (straight 6). Not to mention loads and loads of easy bolt ons and tons of used ARB lockers, etc on CL. I'm 6'5" tall and fit in the Cherokee. But they do require a little more love. Yes...

Looking to buy a Trooper-what to look for

I think you will like the Trooper. I had a first gen with the 2.8 V6. I loved the simple layout of that truck, and it worked pretty well bone stock. I now have a '99 and really love the truck. It is more comfortable, and has much better power. I do like the TOD on mine, basically AWD when in 4...

Too funny.. One of the first threads I read is Chris', and Matt is replying to it. Great site.. Matt mentioned it the other day, but linked to the site for a thread about Saline Valley for a future trip we are planning. A follow up to our Panamint trip from a week ago. -Wayne
