appreciation
I love this forum b/c people like Mike do post experiences both good and bad. Who has not made many a mistake out there? I've had several near misses all of which were because of errors on my part. I can remember once when breaking camp I just pulled the wheel chocks out, was on a...
I'm afraid I know what it is. I had the same problem on the same unit. In my case I sent it in to the company and they told me this is the sound it makes when it is fried. Power surge most likely culprit.
Looks like it has most of the features one would want-- the ability to dial it for AGMs or whatever battery type you have -- desulfating feature--smart charging.
Questions would be about its durability and how it handles the elements. Also, one important feature it doesn't have is a...
carmanah controller hijack
I have one of the Carmanah solar controllers on my AT and was wondering about the jumper feature for AGMs. What are your thoughts on removing that so that the maximum charge output is 14.1 vs 14.4 for the flooded cell batteries?
good idea
I think it could work. It kinda reminds me of those DIY aircraft kits. If people can do that, most should be able to put together a RTT platform. And the cost savings on the shipping alone would be signifiant as well as not having to import from overseas -- which has to be significant...
solar, other factors
Going solar has one addt'l advantage for some; it's just fun. For some reason, I find powering off the sun's rays pleasing. I guess it harkens back to childhood fascination with the sun and electronics. Like Martyn said, it is really about having a plan--and that can be fun...
sleeping bags
I love sleeping bags, especially down. I'm 6'1" and I use a mummy. I could easily use blankets or other bedding with the trailer and have. But, all four of us use down bags and sleep well. It's hard to beat for simplicity and versatility. We are prepared for cold (easily handle...
cb
I think I might have what you're looking for. It's an old Cobra CB, in great shape last I used it. It was a higher end model back in its day. I have an antenna as well. If you're interested, I'll give you more details and take some pics. I used it on some trips to CO and back when I used to...
da bearzzssss
Now that looks promising. Best of all, if these become widely used, there is a possibility of breaking the association between humans and easy access to food.
update
So far, so good. I've fully restored the original Lifeline that came with the trailer and that I overly discharged once when I first had the trailer. As stated in the instructions, it took about 2 weeks. It's nice to know that I now have matched batteries and I'm guessing I've extended...
Well, I fried my previous float charger (line surge -- I think). That's the bad news. Good news is that I've found what I think may be an important upgrade for those with deep-cycle batteries that get infrequent use...
cost
I have always told myself that the main cost issue is the fact that the quality RTTs are all made overseas. They are very bulky and heavy. I've always imagined that the shipping and other costs (devalued dollar in recent years -- international trade costs etc.) are the fly in the ointment...
cool little hooks
Now that's a handy idea. Can you give some info on those little hooks? ---brand name or some info from the packaging. I've not seen them before.
dampness
Not sure how they'd do. The LEDs are encased so they seem okay, but the connectors between them would easily allow water in and could arc to any nearby metal. Some ingenuity (plumbers Goop) with the connectors on the LED light "bars" might keep them water tight. I dunno.
Also, the...
great mod
Thanks again for this write-up. I installed mine this weekend. For those with Overland tents like mine, you can make it work with the fabric insulator that surrounds the support poles. I decided to rivet the clips that come with this light kit to the fabric. Works great so far.
Great work! I've been wanting to do this type of mod for some time and I think you've got it figured out.
Does the multi-color option mean that each of the four strips are a different color, or are individual diodes different along each strip?
Thought this was interesting re: the entry of large semi-conductor companies into the fab of solar cells likely leading to both "smarter" cells at lower cost.
