I watched the Murder Mountain documentary on Netflix before and again after the trip. This map is the whole of the Emerald Triangle and it is a weird place. It lives up to the reputation. We didn't have any troubles with anyone though. A friend used to live there and traveled the Honeydew...
I got it from Indi4x (link to the Isuzu store below) but I don't see it listed any longer. They make them, so I'm sure if you ask. I had to cut off 2 or so inches and re-weld so the jack was not sticking out too far. You might order it to the length you want so it will be flush with the tire...
This is the map we used. I highly recommend the Usal Rd. the blue line roads are listed on this map as "paved but rugged" which was a good description.
Mattole Beach is not on the map but worth the visit.
Well a few months ago, I updated the build quite a bit then did a trip to Humboldt County and the Lost Coast. I got the Roofnest for $2100 off of CL. It was brand new and still was in the factory packaging. The guy bought it but never mounted it. There are a few quirks aout it I don't like...
Update on the trooper. Recently moved from behind the spare to the side. Just learning to weld and using a harbor freight flux core 90 amp. Happy with the result though!
The basket allows for tow strap storage.
I traded my 2000 sport with 200+k for a couple of troopers so I can speak to both your threads. I agree with everything that has been said so far. I'll add this:
* The valve cover and cam seals on the 3.5 are not too difficult to do yourself if you're a decent shade tree mechanic. The parts...
CR Ray, I researched a lot when I was thinking of doing a auto/man swap. Everything that I found said TOD was auto only. I opted to just sell the 2000 auto and spend a bit more on a 99 manual with less miles. Happy I did.
What I understood though is that the TOD was non operational...
I I watched this video a while ago and found it very informative and interesting. It's just one guy's opinion but he seems to really know what he's talking about.
Troopers are the most under rated SUV. Just stay away from that 4L30E as already mentioned. I love my '99 stick.
If you're still looking: 1999 manual for $4500. (Someone else's ,not mine).

Trooper is a 5 speed manual, 145k miles, 4x4, well maintained (it has to be, I drive it to the middle of nowhere), and ready for more offroad...
Looks just like my trooper, but it's someone elses. I think this is a great rig for the $4500 price!

I finished this a few days ago. I am not a big fan of roof racks, but I plan on getting a plano gun case and some max trax to put up there permanently. Also it is a handy place to mount lights. I cut up an old cheapo rack I had laying around and welded it back together to make the rectangle...
So I decided to fab my own rack. I welded it up with my harbor freight MIG 90 amp. I have very little welding experince, but I'm learning as I go. This thing is pretty stout, and cost less than $150. The round tube is salvaged from a cheapo rack I had sitting around. I cut it up and welded...
