Yeah... good luck with finding hotels during some stretches. The book I linked in the first post would be helpful. I'd recommend anyone contemplating doing the loop purchase the book and look through it before heading out
I tried to make a reservation at the start of my trip, but was told I couldn't. Maybe by the time I tried they had sold their allotment of reservations?
At 1900-ish they started loading the ferry. And they let us on! The guys with the truck(s) and my jerry cans were a few vehicles behind me, and we were fairly closely parked in the ferry (so I wouldn't have to track them down later). I got my cans and had them attached to the trailer before...
Coming home I had an issue or two.
1. The ferry in Victoria to Port Angeles WA was full (I didn't have a reservation as I didn't really know when I'd be done with my trip). The gentleman there said I could wait till the next ferry, but with my trailer I'd probably be a no-go. And that would...
Not going to do a day - by - day account, but some highlights.
1. Very enjoyable trip. Never really had an issue finding gas, but with any overlanding trip, don't pass up an opportunity to get gas. Unlike in the United States, there isn't a gas station on every corner.
2. I departed WA...
So early September I headed out to do the Vancouver Island Grand Loop. This link really goes in depth regarding the loop:
https://www.vancouverislandgrandloop.com/
Figure 1000 miles in about 5-8 days. I started on a Sunday and finished on a Friday.
Along with downloading the GPS route...
Bought a running 46 CJ2A in 1989 and fixed it up (still have it). In 2008 bought a 98 TJ (2.5/5 speed) totally stock and built it for off roading and overlanding. Still have it. In 2023 ordered a new Willys JLU. Love my new Jeep.
We had a great class. Lots of info put out in just an hour. Hopefully one or more of the attendees will begin building their own little overlanding trailer!
I like GAIA. Never really had an issue. Till recently. Somehow it has started downloading a bunch of maps (a ton of them from years ago), in that eventually my phone can't take it anymore (android). I've got 64GB of storage, and once GAIA got to taking up 27GB of storage, it stopped...
Meet me at the NWOR this week. On Friday (21 June 2024) at 1100 I'll be teaching a class on building an inexpensive overlanding trailer.
https://overlandadventurerallies.com/nwor/
I'll have my trailer there, along with pictures and handouts giving part numbers and such. I'll also be...
My little home-made military style trailer has the same track width as my 46 Willys. So narrower with the TJ, and even more narrower than my JLU. Tub is 40" x 50". 99% of the time it has been pulled by my TJ when overlanding.
Build thread if interested...
Good luck finding a TJ Dana 44 in a junkyard.
I had a Dana 44 built with 33 spline alloy axles and a Detroit Softlocker. My TJ is a stick. It is perfectly doable on pavement, but you will notice it back there. I call it the "Detroit Shimmy" when it disengages and then reengages.
It depends on how much of a risk you're willing to take, and what the consequences of busting an axle in the middle of nowhere means to you. There's a reason they call them the "Turdy-five" axle.
On my 98 TJ I just bit the bullet and had a Dana 44 built to my specs (33-spline alloy axles, 4.88...
Google still shows them at $329.00. For some reason you're not wanting to share this website with the rest of us. I'm still respectfully calling BS. Post the link to these heavily discounted Maxtrax in the USA ($200 - 250) and I will post an apology for doubting you (with emojis).
