    APRS Emergency beacon?

I’m running aprsdroid into Mobilinkd TNC. Still pretty new to all this but I don’t see that this client supports mic-e based emergency beacon. Is this correct and if so, does anyone know of an android client that can send an emergency beacon?

Problems programming a Yaesu VX-xx radio?

I'm programming a VX-7r with Commander and ttl2usb. I initially had a problem with Win7. Control Panel >Hardware and Sound >Device Manager >Ports >USB Serial Port >Port Settings Changing Bits per second from 9600 to 4800 worked. Maybe faster would work but 4800 worked and I stopped messing...

    12v fridge in bear country?

No bear encounters for us on that trip. I did notice on that trip that the Dude Ranchers that run dudes into Slough Creek to fish had their packstock inside a portable fence. That would be a good source for real world experience. I've only heard/read secondhand that they are effective. Some...

    12v fridge in bear country?

Last time I backpacked in Yellowstone I packed in a portable bear fence. That was just for the campsite, we still did the bear bag/ tree thing. A portable fence could be used for your base camp perimeter. Perfect application. I made my own but there are companies that sell them. They show...

M101a2 with a truck bed pop up camper?

Here's one that I copied. It works well but there is some windage. You have to trim back the wheel wells. This one was written up in an online magazine, fourwheeler, July 2014? Can't find it anymore. You'll have to join steel soldiers to see the images. Good luck! http://tinyurl.com/hfoxnu6

Fire Pan for Restricted Areas. What do you use?

You can get stainless dog bowls for pretty cheap. You can also put legs on them with t nuts and carriage bolts. I've made woodstoves for use inside of tipis. I made them out of galvanized sheet and I went to great lengths to burn off the zinc with a torch and with regular stove burns. You can...

    Potty Tent

Hah, when I first read that, I thought it was "contractor" bags! I thought, man, that's some heavy duty .... That is a good tip, thanks. Save me some bucks.

    Air conditioner alternatives

You can't beat the price and performance of those little window units. It is also valuable to know that some of them work with a 1000W generator. I had not seen that data point anywhere on the 'net. I wracked my brain trying to figure a way to use a window unit in the Alaskan. I would have...

    Air conditioner alternatives

I'm sorry I have no pictures and the unit is out of the camper and in storage until summer. The whole backside of the portable ac is the intake and exhaust for the condenser side. It is completely isolated from the airflow on the cooling side. I put foam weatherseal gasket around the back of the...

    Air conditioner alternatives

I set out to do like longhorn with an 8000 btu honeywell. Then I realized I could butt the whole backside of the ac up to some cutouts in the lower wall of the alaskan camper this eliminates the vent tube. The honda eu2000i would not tolerate a compressor cycle until I added a hard start...

    Heating your tent/canopy/camper/truck/car

To the OP: I have used the Origo alcohol stove that goes inside the Origo heater for many years to melt snow inside my shelter for my dog team. It is a failsafe stove that uses a fuel that is very forgiving of spills in an unforgiving environment. The stove itself may be transported when full...

    Tent condensation

That is a big problem with silnylon tipis. The usual approach there is to affix a very light breathable liner to the wall of the tipi. Otherwise it will rain on you inside the tipi. Search tipi liner and you'll see what I mean.

Communication question; what CBs (or other) do people recommend?

Wainiha, I know what you mean, I feel the same way when I'm in a deep hole in the terrain. For that reason, I've become interested in NVIS propagation, but whether there's someone listening in on the other side ...

Pintle vs Lock&Roll vs Max Coupler

Thx for the Grainger suggestion swampfox. I ended up importing a Dixon Bate. Spendy, but a multi-axis coupler would have cost me as much since I'd have to hire out the welding on my trailer. I'm just not yet ready to sell off the woodshop and try to learn welding. I think you're right about a...

    pintle vs off-road hitch

The Dixon Bate flush mount pintle hook was mentioned previously in this thread, along with a link to find it in the UK: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/116484-Articulating-Pintle?highlight=articulating+pintle I imported one to US and can confirm that the bolt pattern perfectly...

    Harbor freight camping/kayak trailer

To add a data point on this, I have your exact model of trailer, and I carry my canoe like this (not a pic of mine). http://www.flickr.com/photos/outrigger/7335835/in/set-185726 With my 200 lb displacement outrigger float, about 20 lbs in the air, the Harbor Freight trailer does OK. With my...

    Harbor freight camping/kayak trailer

Nice work! Does the bed have a gate? If not, you could go with bolt-on risers for the boat/bike rack. Bolt-on kayak/bike frames: http://www.magnetatrailers.com/canoekayaktrailersaccessories/canoekayaktrailerparts.html One way would be to lose that Harbor Freight tongue piece and bolt on a...
