Bolting jerry can mounts directly to tailgate? Talk me out of it...

This is actually a smart idea. Not invasive, cheap (or DIY), you can use it only when you need it. I would add bracing to that 90deg weld, don't underestimate the force 30-40kg will apply.

Bolting jerry can mounts directly to tailgate? Talk me out of it...

if you dont need it full time, only for a few particular cases, i would just spend my money on quality fuel cans and carry them inside the camper only when needed.

    "Cheaper" seats for overland travel?

`Thanks for all the replies. The seats were crap to begin with, Hiluxes are not known for comfort. And after 300.000kms the foam was in dire shape so the truck did go from bad to worse in the first place. Since my last reply, and before reading all your suggestions, I sent the seat to a buddy's...

    "Cheaper" seats for overland travel?

The thing is, being overseas, options are limited and/or expensive enough to simply avoid. A good set of seats from, say, a late model 4Runner, are around $1000 for a used pair in dire shape. Popular offers from like a late model BMW which is a common swap stateside is practically impossible to...

    "Cheaper" seats for overland travel?

Hey guys, I've been debating this a long time (analysis paralysis) and will like input on this issue: I have been meaning to change my truck's seats for long distance travel. I travel 9-10 hours at a time and my seats are worn and uncomfortable, have been for a few years in fact. The thing is I...

    Diesel Hilux question

While that model Hilux is common in Venezuela and Colombia, We only got them with the gasoline 22R engine. No diesels. I can only be 100% certain for Venezuela, I'd sat 95% for Colombia. I also have some experience in Costa Rica and pretty much all the Hiluxes they have are diesels, so its a...

    Air Hose Reel?

I realized that was your question, and I read the thread hoping to learn of an alternative as well. But I guess there aren't many... As far as placement goes, side hatches on canopies/campers/toppers seem to be the most common places. I'd love to know if someone has installed them under the...

    Air Hose Reel?

FWIW, the Apex unit is absolutely impressive. Build quality, fit and finish is impressive. As are their tire valves. Highly recommend them if you air down and up frequently.

    Disc brake conversion for FJ40

I did see those threads but I have not dealt with the company aside from the actual purchase, which was ok. The kit went on without a hitch. The 40 is used on the street and highways, although I rarely go over 50mph. It was definitely an improvement, I can't compare it to the 60 brakes as I...

    Disc brake conversion for FJ40

I personally installed the JT Outfitters kit, which is custom, includes everything you need (brackets, lines, rotors, calipers, brackets and hardware) and I think it works just fine. I believe the calipers are Chevy of some kind, pads are easy to get (they're also included). Stopping power is...

Why are torsion bars so vilified? And were Land Cruisers ever designed for recreational off-roading

That applies to all third world countries (or lower). Roads are usually bad enough, transportation is hard enough. Travelling from A to B may be harder at times than wheeling.

Why are torsion bars so vilified? And were Land Cruisers ever designed for recreational off-roading

Nothing wrong with torsion bars, but as every other system it comes with pros and cons, one just has to accept the compromises of whichever option they take. As far as LC's being made for "North American Wheeling" (ie Rock Crawling), well, they're obviously not. Very few vehicles appear to be...

2m HAM (Dual): Monitor two 2m frequencies?

Well both the Mic and the faceplate have a button to change sides. I don't prerun or drive anything over 50 on somewhat flat dirt roads, pressing the button on the mic has always been super easy for me ! It can be a little bit confusing to know what side you're receiving and what side you're...

2m HAM (Dual): Monitor two 2m frequencies?

As mentioned, yes dual VFO radios will listen to two frequencies at the same time and only be able to transmit on one side at any given time, which you select. You can move freely between both sides. It could be VHF/VHF, UHF/UHF or VHF/UHF (and viceversa). You can toggle between transmit sides...

    Roaming Lost: x3 Locked 1990 Toyota HDJ81 (80 Series)

Awesome. Thankfully I'm skinny. I have the Sport model seats on my FJ40 but would like something more appropriate for long distance travel on the Hilux and the GTS2s with the lumbar adjustment might be good enough!

How many of you ACTUALLY overland with your 80s or 60s

The US may be a different market but 80s do fetch a pretty penny in the third world as well. Land Cruisers are legends and that carries a price with it. This doesn't mean people won't still use them as travel vehicles, all the opposite, even when some people use them as collector's items (and...

Diode Dynamics on ARB Bumper - Pics Wanted

Those kits look awesome but I can't find anyone running their SS5 pods or bars as their main lights (like your BD LP9s) on ARB bumpers anywhere. Wondering how they look. I personally prefer big lights over light bars as main lights up front, just for mere aesthetics, but the Diode Dynamic SS5...

Diode Dynamics on ARB Bumper - Pics Wanted

IS anyone using these lights on an ARB Bumper? Specifically the SS3 pods as main lights? All I can find online are stockish setups or low profile bumpers. I'd be interested in seeing your setups. Looking to run these! Thanks Luis
