Starting to plan Disco 2 overland preparation

    Here's a link to a tour around mine: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/127611-Let-s-take-a-walk

    Let's take a walk...

My recovery gear bag. This thing's really evolved over the years and except for the pickets (1" stakes), is probably as light as it's ever been. Included are a tow strap with locking carabiners, two tree straps with pulleys and shackles preconnected, Hi LIft Lift-Mate, top and bottom...

    Let's take a walk...

Open drawers. Left: Small Duraflame firestarters, assortment of ZipLocs and trash bags, maul, razor saw and pruning shears. Dry food items occupy this space during trips. Right: Everything for cooking, camp lighting, spare batteries, freedom press for coffee, wine aerator, knives, utensils...

    Let's take a walk...

It's been a while. Here's the rest... The cockpit. From the top down, the Garmin NUVI is hard-wired to the fuse panel below the steering column, which frees up the cigarette lighter for two usb charging outputs. Alpine head unit with CD player (CDs???) and aux cable which I plug my phone...

Running with the Devil: Four Days on El Camino del Diablo

Hey Dirk, it's great to see that you posted the trip report here! Julie and I had a great time, and for those researching or considering doing this trip, I would highly recommend it. As for solo travel, I think there are things to think about, but I can say that we never felt like we were in...

    Overland Expo West 2015

My wife and I were (are) planning on dispersed camping in the area starting tomorrow night, but we may cut that down to just Saturday night or a day trip only on Saturday if the weather's bad. Bummer, since we've been there for the last two years and had a great time.

Oh man, I really do need to get some interior shots up! Thanks for the kind words, guys. How's yours treated you, Eric? I'd be interested to hear how it's held up and under what type of use!

Looking at Discovery 2's...what should I be prepared for??

I'll try to add to what others have stated. I agree with Howski, and believe that there are no free rides with used vehicles. They're going to cost money to operate, so you might as well get something with some character! Catastrophic things include front driveshaft failure and overheating...

    Let's take a walk...

The Roof Situation I carry a ton of stuff on the roof. That even included several sheets of drywall, plywood and lumber when I remodeled the house. The rack parts are all Yakima, with two crossbars attached to the factory rails and another two on gutter-mount towers. It took some doing, but...

    Fire Extinguisher

Mine's a Kidde brand 5-B,C. It came with a pretty weak vehicle mount, but is now secured with two Quick Fist clamps. Wherever you store your extinguisher, be sure you can get to it quickly. Seconds really do count, and you can put a surprising amount of fire out with a properly used extinguisher.

National Luna controller not charging 2nd Battery in LR Disco 2

Thread raised from the dead. I have a National Luna setup with in-cab charge controller installed in my 2003 LR Disco, and it's been acting up just like the others noted here. Did any of you guys get a resolution? I talked to Paul from Equipt at Overland Expo. He said to check all the...

They're available from Amazon:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FKPJJNY/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 VERY bright in there at night now! I ordered two of these and doubled up on the rear light by splicing them...

    Let's take a walk...

Thanks! I've been very pleased with the way the NL system works, kicking in to charge the Aux battery 5 minutes after startup, unless bypassed inside the cabin. I shamelessly copied another D2 owner with the same headliner. Install was, uh, challenging.

    Let's take a walk...

Today, My Dual Battery Setup Here's an electrical update to my walk around thread! I run dual batteries since I have a fridge and a winch. I'm running a National Luna dual battery charge controller. I had to fabricate a mounting platform for the batteries, since I couldn't source a dual...

Student Project: Front Bumper & Recover R&D

I say no. Tow hooks are a little bit "old school" now, with shackles being a safer (multidirectional) option. A tow strap can come off of a tow hook with repeated load applications and releases, particularly if the direction of pull shifts upward.
