Not sure how much hardocre off-roading you be doing but I think you will be happy with the performance of the true-trac. I have one on the rear and I have not had any issues since installed. I may be looking to get one in the front as well.
I saw the e-series at the work/truck show last week. 7.3 was on display with 6speed torqshift transmission.
If you are on FB here is some more info i posted:

hey, i did some research and decided to keep my rear FF axle and change the gearing to 4.10 from 3.55. If you go that route you can get this one for the rear

If you decide to go to higher gearing grab this one for the rear...
By dumping the mechanical lift pump and adding the electric pump, you may be able to keep the fuel bowl by using this:

I use it but my 7.3 is a 2000 and thought it maybe a little pricey, its simple and effective.
Cool project with a low-mile 7.3! may I ask why arent you going the full 6"? I think you are going to want that travel also, while the motor is out, may want to consider adding things like e-fuel (not sure if '97 had mechanical fuel or e-fuel pump), Frx, Hpx and a few other upgrades to keeping...
Check your vacuum lines, vacuum pump, vacuum manifold AND brake booster (well maybe there isnt a way to check that. I too had a problem right before our cross country trip and I narrowed it down to a tired brake booster. Swapped in a new one and everything was good to go. Also, where is this low...
Do you have a tuner or is it stock? Alot of black smoke out of the exhaust? Stock boost in a VAN (less boost than the trucks) is 12-14 psi. If you have a tuner, you should be in the 22-26 psi range if depending on how aggressive the tune is. Check for boost leaks or exhaust leaks at the up-pipes...
Looking good! I like what you did with the new roof! Re: the axle, add some silicone to the passenger knuckle vacuum port under the u-joint steering arm and the drivers side knuckle to prevent water intrusion later on. Grab the nylon inserts Chris sells for the unit bearings and swap out the...
If your locker does not have to be a selectable unit, consider the Detroit Tru-Trac. It performs like a limited slip but you dont have the regular maintenance of clutches as this unit is completely mechanical. I have one and love it.
