02 montero rear diff whine

I am new to this site, hope this request for infomation is ok?
Well here goes...... I just bought an 02 montero XLS, 4.9 rear end, and noticed a whine fromn the rear diff when accelerating, when you let off the gas it quiets down. Its not a bad whine but since I know its there it bothers me.
Where can I find either gearing or a complete good rear diff for this vehicle?

Sounds like some bearings in either the carrier or pinion (?) are shot, have you checked the gear oil level recently?

As far as sourcing a new axle or differential carrier, junk yards, junk yards...or really badly wrecked monteros that can be used for donors..

Probably bearings. Dealers will have new r&p gears for $$$$$ if it comes down to that.

Every Montero/Raider I've own, that's 5 , has/had a slight whine from the rear end. Some did it when letting off the gas and some did it when accelerating. I would not be to concern with it. Just drive it and have fun.

Also I've never heard of a rear end going bad on one of these trucks, maybe they do, if so it must be very rare.
