Greetings,
I have found a 04 xls monty w/141k for sale in my area for $4000.00.
Pretty clean from what I can tell from the pics.
it is listed as 4wd/AWD with the 3.5 motor. It is loaded.
Is that a good deal or should I go for the 99 limited, loaded with 212k very well maintained.
I really cant' decide so I hope someone here can convince me on what to do.
thanks in advance.

Are you talking about the Montero or the Montero Sport?

What do you want to do with the truck?

A. Montero
B. travel mostly highway, some forest service roads(gravel). Camping, day trips to National Forest or National Park.
No rock crawling or mudding.

For what you describe, I'd say that the '04 is a no-brainer. It's an extremely comfortable truck with plenty of room and more than enough off-pavement competence. My family loves my '01 for its comfort and roominess, and it always impresses in the rough stuff. If the rig you're looking at passes muster, it's a great price.

The '99 is certainly a great rig, but it has no advantages over the '04 for what you need.

I have an '05 (Limited) and would agree with the above statement.

I would go with the 2004 Montero, such a comfortable ride, prefect for what you want.

I'm also confused..The 2004 Montero was a 3.8L and was a Limited not an XLS. I know why Sabre asked if it was a Sport or not because the '04 Sport came in LS or XLS and was a 3.5L. I think the guy selling is mistaken.(If it turns out it is a Sport I wouldn't suggest buying not so comfortable for long drives and large people or big families.

ok, I will try to make sense of this.
this one looks like the classic Montero Sport. Not the newer Limited body style that Consumer Reports says will flip when you look at it.
it has the white dash gauges and is suppose to be loaded. it does say xls on the back and it does have 4wd. hope this clears up the confusion. I might go get it tomorrow if they still have it. it's down to this or a 98 4runner limited(new tires, but needs a timing belt).
thanks for all the replies and opinions. it really does help with my decision.

looks like this is Montero Sport not Montero ( 7 Pass) . I personally don't like Montero Sport.

You should do a lot more research on the Montero and Montero Sport and look at an test drive each. The fact that you need help with basic identification, tells me you need to research some more in order to form your own opinion before you are ready to spend a good amount of money and make a purchase. Figure out what you want first, then find the best deal on the Model year that you are looking for. Just my opinion.
