100 series pics w/ 255's

Hey everyone,

I'm helping a friend who just purchased a 2000, 100 series LC and wants to lift it a little and move up to a 33' tire. He's new to all this and wanted me to find pics of a 100 with 255x85/16s and 285x75/16s. The later are a dime a dozen but it doesn't seem like to many 100 series owners are too fond of the 255 flavor?!?

If anyone has pics of a 100 series with a mild lift and 255's I would greatly appreciate it.... BTW, I run 255's on my FZJ80, he likes them but wants to see how they would make his truck look if he ran them... prior to purchase..

Again any pics would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,
Scott

Though I'm a big fan of the 255/85R16 size, one of the BiG advantages with the 285/75 size is the almost limitless choice of tires. With a couple exceptions a 255/85 pretty much dictates a mud tire.

I agree with the 285/75 for looks, they will look good. Though your friend may get slightly better MPG with a 255/85.

Thanks everyone... I run 255's on my 80 and had to put 1.25" spacers due to the wheels having shorter back spacing, thus moving the tires even deeper into the wheel well... However now it drives really good. Prior to the spacers the truck would sway and track on the fwy really bad.

I like the NATO look of the skinnies and performance wise have had no issues with my BFG KM2's on or off road. I run them around 45-50 PSI on the streets and around 20-25 psi offroad....Plus I have a source that gets them fairly cheap.

Again, being my buddy is new to this, I don't think he'll want to run spacers.. And like you guys said, the 285's have a much better tire selection and probably much more stable for a newbie driving a lifted heavy vehicle.

Thanks again
Scott

Why a 255 tire on a 100-Series? Not sure I get it as I see no advantage over a wider tire which will give better grip and conformation over rocks. The front components are good to go up to 315's. ???

WHY? because my 80 looks good w/ 255s...:victory: (J/K)
On a serious note, he's trying to take all factors into consideration, MPG, performance, stress on components (steering system & breaking performance), not wanting to re-gear.

This is also an overall D/D too, so mpg & looks are a big factor.... We all like they way 35's look but at what cost? Its rare, even in LA that you see any modded hundy's ...... That was the reason for looking for pics... 285's vs 255's... not all full figured women with skinny legs look good! LOL...

Good looks is ENOUGH reason!

Not saying go 315's, just saying to do 285's. 255's will provide less overal performance. Who wants skinny tires or skinny legs anyhow? :sombrero:

Come on, stop making statements like these. You ever wonder why 255's are so damn popular on this forum? There is a reason. Please explain, in detail, how they will provide less overall performance. Also, please state how much experience you have wheeling both a 255 and 285 size tire. I have wheeled and both extensively as well as driven both sizes a lot as a DD and there is a big difference in several performance areas.

I'll help you out. Talk to us about the "less overall performance" in areas such as MPG, conforming to rocks, surface area and contact patch area, sand, deep ruts, deep mud, tire weight vs tire height, rotational mass, etc.

I will say I think a 100 "LOOKS" better with a 285, but that does not mean it performs better.

Not on a 100-Series which is the sub-forum this question has been asked in. Go start a Poll and ask who has what size tire on their 100-Series. 255 285 295 305 315

So you are saying you have zero actual real world (not web wheeling) experience with this size tire, yet you know it performs worse than a 285 on a 100 series? How exactly do you know this? Depending on uses and needs, a 255 may be the perfect tire for a 100, or not. Post factual info and first hand experience so that the original poster can gather info and decide for himself. If he wants 315 info you have lots of experience there, so knock yourself out. In the case of 255 vs 285, not so much.

This is why the web can be a great, or dangerous resource. Opinions become facts.

Gary and Monica Wescott drove the "Turtle IV"(a fully equipped F350) across Siberia in the WINTER on 255/85-16's. That should pretty much open and shut the case on the performance aspect of the discussion... As for what looks better, thats subject to an entirely different debate. :ylsmoke:

You want 255's...get 'em.

If he wants 255's...he can get 'em.

My point...do a Poll...see how many folks run 255 vs others on their 100. I could care less what size tires folks run.
