A couple of years ago I picked up this '78 ute from a mate in Sydney. Its one of 4 G60's I own but my first ute. I drove it around for a while but now decided to take it off the road to "freshen" up a few things. Plan is to make a great little tourer I can take away when I do trips on my own with a roof top tent and tray set out for camping. My GU serves the purpose when I take the whole family along.
Its running the standard "P" engine straight 6 with a Marks adapters 5 speed hanging off the back end. Springs are 2" lifted. Its a hell of fun to drive and cant wait to get it back on the road.
This is how it was the day I got it home.
I also got a factory tub for it. These are super rare so even though its in rough shape after sandblasting its worth hanging onto. Plan is to rebuild the floor and sub frame and fit the sides to it.. eventually.
Part of the freshen up includes building a new tray for it. At some point the standard fuel tank was swapped for a GQ Patrol tank. I was a little worried about it going BOOM with all the welding going on so I though it best to remove it. Easier said than done but eventually got it out. The mess on the floor is stinky water from the cross member.. not fuel!
Next was to knock up the frame for the tray. I ran a couple of straps around it to keep it square while I tacked it.
Then fitted up the rear 35's to check clearance. Needed to lift it another 75mm to clear the big rubber.
As I was working on the tray I kept looking at the empty space where the fuel tank goes on the MWB and SWB models (at the very rear of the chassis). On a ute this it where the spare tyre goes hence the tank being up front but i wont be running the tyre there so wanted to test fit the tank, it seemed perfect for it! Sure enough its like it was made for it!
Anyway, thats about it for now. Cheers
