1981 Toyota FJ40: The Jalopnik Classic Review

Totally agree with this paragraph:

"They tried, and failed, to bring back that look with the FJ Cruiser. Has anyone ever driven one of those? Trying to see around that massive A-pillar on curvy mountain roads is impossible. They also have that uniquely modern quality where they look cheap and expensive at the same time. By that, I mean cheaply made (lots of plastic) and expensive to fix."

Really feel Toyota missed the boat with the new Fj Cruiser...

The reviewer didn't do too bad of a job considering that he'd never driven one before, though I'm still scratching my head over his "It's a Land Cruiser, but not a Land Cruiser" comment. Like many people, he completely misses the point of the stock F-series engines; yes they only made 135 hp new and yes they're heavy and slow on the highway, but they make more than 90% of their peak torque at only 1800 RPM, and about 60% just off idle! Hard to appreciate until you drive one off-road.

I had a 1982 with the diesel (Canada). It was one of my favorite vehicles ever owned, though hard to drive much faster than 60 mph. You have to love the air vents on the side, kick open for ventilation and you can see the road through them. Not complicated, not much can go wrong. Sold in 1987, and noted same model for sale recently at a much higher price than I sold for back then.

Not really because Toyota made the 7* series which is about as good as it gets in durabilty and comfort.Unfortunately ,americans wern t on the list of countries to get them.
The FJCruiser is what 98% of the population wants and expects from an SUV.
