This last year with Klaus has been an absolute BLAST, He is my daily driver and would not hesitate to take him anywhere my heart desired. He has ~217000 on his frame and ~15k on a Go Westy (GW) 2300cc boxer...man he sounds gooooooooood. Asking 20k
This is my first Vanagon, the only other VW in my life was mom's 67 beetle, and wow did we get "lucky" in VW land with Klaus. Since purchasing him we first started with a tune up replacing plugs, wires, cap, timing adjustment, new belts, new tires and a new air filter. All oil changes have been done at 3k by me.
Shortly after owning Klaus we noticed a leak in the coolant expansion tank and replaced it with the GW Aluminum one, problem solved problem staying solved.
Next we saw his exhaust was...well used (I counted 11 visual holes
We promptly upgraded to his current exhaust which is the GW SS set. Man does he sound good cruising down the road.
Then we upgraded his headlights by removing the African Grill, which we still have and will go with sale, to the older two headlight setup with some Holly LED lights. This helped bring him to 2025 headlight land.
We resealed the skylight (this was not sealed per specs from previous install) We had leaks until we fixed that.
New side mirrors to eliminate "mirror flop"
New OEM front floor mats
Lastly I finished some birch wood panels, old panels were falling apart, with a natural shellac finish and man do they shine in the sun...
We recently purchased the tach and speedo set from GW to upgrade the dash. The current speedo and odometer work flawlessly. The clock on the right side has been inop since we purchased it. I wanted a new tach to watch the engine as I cruised through the mountains.
He has little to no rust for a 40 year old vehicle. If you would like pics of specific areas feel free to ask.
Below is a list of upgrades done by previous owners. Some things we knew about when we purchased the van other things we have found as we have wrenched on Klaus. Earlier I said we were lucky to find this van as it has been taken care of over the years and conscious upgrades have been made to keep him on the road. I have looked at other Vanagons and am always so surprised at how good of condition our van is in. He has NEVER left me stranded, there is no parasitic electrical draw to monkey with, he has always just cranked up.
Previous owner upgrades to my knowledge
Custom slideout kitchen cabinet (we came to LOVE this design!!!) I'm glad we didn't have the full kitchen, it gave us more room for gear and what not.
GW 2300cc engine ~15k on it
Shiny radiator unknown install date
newer coolant lines no cracks
SS Coolant pipes
GW third brake light
GW Shift Shaft Elbow
GW 16" wheels
Center Console
Newer tires with ~5k on them
GW Mattress Topper and Cover
GW solar set up (has been inop since we purchased it)
Upgraded red pop-top fabric, i've survived some downpours with it open no leaks
Fiama awning
Original paint that I know of, Meridian Brown
I know i'm probably missing some upgrades as I don't have an exhaustive list from previous owners. I will also include the Bentley Manual that has been my go to for trouble shooting issues as we did our upgrades. I don't know how you'd own this van without this book
It's been less than a year of ownership but boy am I gonna miss this guy. A new adventure awaits us and Klaus isn't part of the equation. Please feel free to ask questions that I may have not covered here; i'm an open book and will tell you everything I have come to love about Klaus. If you've been thinking of dipping your toe in Vanagon land this is the perfect van to make that a reality!! Asking 20k
I'm willing to drive to Raleigh or Wilmington for serious buyers to show this BEAUTIFUL van.
