1986 Ford Econoline sliding door lock problem

Hey everyone, my dad has a 1986 Ford Econoline Club Wagon that he’s working on restoring. He’s having a problem with the door lock on the sliding door, it intermittently locks upon closing when pushing the lock tab from the inside. Is there an adjustment for this? Also, what is the proper orientation for the inside door handle? Should it be horizontal like the exterior? I attached photos of his components for comparison. Any help is much appreciated, thank you!

The interior handle points at about 10 o'clock when closed and latched I believe. Please elaborate on the actually problem. It was unclear before.
