Because the OBS Ford trucks are super cool. Would be more justifiable if it was a PSD though. But it's a ruggedly simple rig, pretty capable and will take a beating.

And because people are starting to realize how much $$$ sprinter vans cost to keep running :)

#onelessprinter cause sprinter are over priced junk. You can turbo the IDI & in the end it’s a better more reliable motor.

Possibly so. But in stock form I hear it's a bit sluggish.
And modifications are possible, but I really try to keep the engine of an 'expedition vehicle' as close to stock as possible, so it can be worked on anywhere. The 7.3psd has acceptable performance in stock form, and any mechanic on any continent can work on these and likely get parts for them when things break.
I would still take the IDI over a modern diesel, but I think the PSD is a nice sweet spot.

With that being said, thanks for the tip, I'm not prohibitively far from that shop if I ever get my hands on an IDI and want more juice.

I hear you..particularly when it comes to have idi'd worked on.
I am on the East Coast.. I have had diesel shops tell me straight up.. "no". When I needed something done.
They won't work on an IDI. But PSD's, like in the wizard of oz.. "Why didn't you say so.. come on in..!! "

Early in my contracting years I had a 1993 7.3 idi in f350 dually flatbed. Bought it from a rancher with 395k on it he had it listed for $2500 told me I sounded like a nice young fella if I picked it up today it was $1000. Took the bait and man nothing on that ford truck worked but the engine and window cranks and when I went up the large grades I sure had a black smoke machine. Still ran great my masonry contractor took it over and used it 3 years and then left it in Mexico saying it was ready to retire from the mountains of colorado... I still work with him and his family still uses the truck to this day with over 480k on it!
