Over the past month since I purchased my 95 RRC I have loved every second when I drive it, barring one mechanical issue that keeps cropping up: the rear upper tail gate keeps coming un-latched. Are there any known endemic issues with these units, as I am not sure where to begin when I start replacing parts. It tends to happen on the right hand side latch, but I am not sure if it is on the window assembly or the receiving (body) side. Since these units aren't that easy to find, I want to focus my attention on only those parts that tend to be the issue and start from there. I know there are aftermarket units, but I am not sure I need to go there. Yet.

You probably just need to adjust one or more latches. These are operated via rods running from the center handle latch out to each side. You can access the threaded adjustment in them by removing the cover plates on the inside lower edge of the tailgate and then using a 1/4 wrench to adjust the rods tighter or looser until you can get both sides to latch easily and stay shut. Keep in mind that due to the design of the center pull for the latches, what you do to one side will effect the other as well. You want to get the two sides balanced in the center. If you can't get them in the right place then they may be worn internally too much. New replacements are available from Rovers North. Kind of pricey but necessary.

The catches for the latches can also be adjusted up and down and in and out if you loosen the two screws holding them to the vehicle.

This is a very common problem on the old classics and I have wrestled with my own many times. Besides the rods getting out of alignment as mentioned above the frames can get bent and warped slightly making it difficult to latch.
My issue was resolved by unscrewing the catches (the little nubs) for the latches as mentioned above, then re installing them with some washers between the catch and the pillar to push the catch further out allowing the latches to close securely. Was easier than monkeying with the inner workings.
