Well, I feel pretty dumb. After spraying down the steering wheel to the point of ridiculousness and having little luck, I finally broke down and purchased the turn signal / wiper control / clock spring assembly. The job was straight forward, simple, and certainly not worth a trip to the stealsership for. All in it was under 45 minutes taking my time as a first timer. It began with disconnecting the battery and removing the lower dash panel and the metal support behind it, the clamshell around the steering wheel, the two torx screw that hold the airbag and about four electric connectors. The airbag came off no problem and the steering wheel was nearly as easy. Four screws held the assembly and vole! I was on the way of reversing the above with a shiny new assembly in place.
Once everything was buttoned up I took it for a spin. Still squeaked! I couldn't believe it. I jumped on the mud forum and low and behold, on page 27 of the search results, there was mention of lubing the inside rubber boot at the firewall as well as inside the support, just behind the steering wheel but 'inside' the dash area. Fixed. I was spitting mad at myself, but remembered why I have so little faith in the 'did you search' crowd. I had researched this plenty and even thought I had managed a fix, but I think it was more due to warmer temps than anything I had done.
So now I have a perfectly good assembly for sale, dirt cheap, if anyone is interested....
