1998-2002 Ford E350 Transmission Oil Cooler

Thinking if I'm doing a flush and change might as well upgrade the transmission oil cooler too. Especially considering possible performance upgrades. However, it seems like all of the upgrades are for Ford Trucks and not Econolines. The mount points are different and not sure there's room for it.

Different part number from the truck and the mount points look different.

I'm tempted to dive in to the front end and see if I can make the larger cooler work. Anyone have any experience upgrading the transmission oil cooler? I searched around and only found direct replacement posts or F series upgrades.

I used a TruCool 40K (47391) kit on my 03 7.3. Was done in under an hour and only spilled maybe 4-5 drops of fluid. Temps came down about 30 degrees. Very happy with the ease of install. All hardware needed was in the kit but I see where some of the older vans needed additional runs to partstore for proper fittings.

It's been recommended that the 6.o diesel F350 trans coolers are great.
When in Hawaii I had a GMC Safari. I added a remote derale under the van, always on. It worked well.

Considered this. It requires modification as the Econoline is different up front

Seems like this plus a low temp bypass is the way to go.

Pretty straightforward setup that got my temps down. I stumbled into a sale on eBay too and picked the kit up for about 50 bucks cheaper than the norm, so make sure you check there when shopping.

Like stated, the topic has been throughly covered and the only drawback was that some owners with older vans had to find proper fittings. If you search on the smb forum a handful of those people even listed out the exact fittings they ended up using and where they picked them up. Both locally and online.

The B&M supercooler seems like a good basic unit, has some sort of variable size chambers that control the flow of hot vs. cool trans fluid to regulate the temps. I think I am going to give one a try.

I'll keep an eye out on ebay and see if I can find one for cheaper. Did you install a low temp bypass for when it's cold out?

I rarely see freezing so it doesn't seem necessary. The OEM one doesn't seem to have one.

We see freezing from at least November to April. My van is a bogged down slug until the tranny temps get to around a hundred degrees. Those temps don’t come up at idle like the engine oil and coolant does. Not an issue during warmer months, but when winter sets in a bypass would be a nice option.

It's said to be possible to use the 6.0 cooler. one of the best supposedly.

The cooler from the 6.0l is supposed to be a great upgrade. Just takes a little bit of effort to get the right parts. 3/8” lines vs 1/2” lines.
