When I look at Bill Swails Prototype, I can't help but feel that everything he did after this design was a mistake. from 2007 onwards, they are too big, and too difficult to maintain to be useful off-road! in fact most Earthroamers today never go off road. I wish he had stuck with this design as a base for future builds.

I feel that ERs are a work of art. It is for a specialized market. In my opinion, it is a LOEV. Luxury Overland Expedition Vehicle. I currently run a GOEV. Ghetto Overland Expedition Vehicle. Until I retire, this will work for me. I have ground clearance, and enough HP to pull a trailer, and climb any freeway grade at the posted speed limit. I am a rock climber and a mountain biker. Primary camping is on BLM, and down fire roads. I will never do any serious off road travel/camping, which I don't feel that the ER is really designed for. I don't need the ER luxury, but if I could afford an older used one, that would be my rig of choice. That would be my retirement rig. My local climbing/biking areas do not require 4WD, or even a locker to get to, but would be nice at times. Definitely will need 4WD when I retire. Love my RT configuration, but even with my Weldtec lift, still not where I want to be on ground clearance cuz of all the RV underneath. May end up going back to a Ford E series van, but will never pay the ridiculous dollars people want for Sportsmobile.
