1998 Land Rover Discovery LE

Outono

Well-known member
This is a single owner Discovery 1 that was dealer serviced nearly its entire life at Land Rover Newport Beach. I am the second owner and purchased it earlier this year.

• 146,000 miles (still being driven a little each week)
• Automatic transmission
• Salvage title (due to being sold at auction, not due to an accident or problem)

ASKING: $9,000

History

I bought this vehicle earlier this year at auction. For those unfamiliar, unless you're a dealer, broker, or wrecker, any vehicle normal people buy at auction automatically gets a salvage title, even if its mint. That's how it goes in California. The truck was donated to charity and that charity took it to auction through Copart.

NOTE: I've been getting questions on clarifying the Copart aspect. The business takes and sells Donated Vehicles as part of its auctions. You can check out donated vehicles that are currently live here.

As for the clean title vs salvage title, here is a screen shot from the actual auction with the VIN of the vehicle.

The "-ct" in “CA - Dlr/dis/exp-ct” means Clean Title, which this vehicle had when it entered the auction.

Notice California residents get an Acquisition Bill of Sale, which will become a Salvage title if you revive it, which is what I did after doing all of the work to the vehicle. It's not an easy process and its expensive to get it done right.

Maintenance

I spent the past few months fixing just about everything that looked like it needed some work. While the Carfax shows the truck had been serviced at Land Rover Newport Beach nearly its whole life, there was some wear and tear that I tended to so that the truck would be in tip top condition. The following work was completed over this past Spring and Summer:

• NEW brake master cylinder
• NEW Bosch power steering pump
• REBUILT in California (Straight Line Steering) steering gear
• NEW high and low pressure steering fluid lines (OEM and Aftermarket)
• NEW Tom Woods front drive shaft with X-Spline
• NEW front brake rotors and pads
• NEW rear caliper (driver side)
• NEW fan clutch
• NEW belt
• NEW ball joint on track rod
• NEW battery
• NEW brake light bulbs and plastic harnesses
• UPGRADED front suspension with Terrafirma shocks and OEM bushings
• Fluid flush and general evaluation by local Land Rover specialist shop

What makes this such a great truck:

• The dash is pristine with no lifting, cracking, or problems whatsoever
• Essentially no rust anywhere except a little (dime size) forming near the Alpine window area and a bit of surface rust under the hood near the front passenger light (dime size). This was a California car its whole life.
• No check engine light, passed smog on first try
• No signs of head gasket issues or overheating problems
• Does not drip! First Discovery i've seen that doesn't drip where it parks
• Interior is in fantastic condition, but the driver seat has a rip in it
• Body in incredible condition
• Front sunroof works! (I'd get it a new seal though, as its pretty dried out)

I am also including several parts with this truck that were pulled off of my current daily driver Disco 1:

• Terrafirma front springs (used)
• Terrafirma steering stabilizer (used)
• OEM front springs
• New Denso Iridium spark plugs
• New STI spark wires
• 4x 235/85/R16 General Grabber HTS AT tires (just a few thousand miles on them, I swapped to MT on my daily)
• Rear trailing arms with new Terrafirma bushings (lightly used)
• Front track rods with good condition ball joints (used)
• Box full of LEDs for just about every light on this vehicle

Known issues:

• Rear windows and passenger window not working. The rear is easy with the Atlantic British bypass ($15), the passenger is likely a fuse.
• Needs an alignment (due to replacing the ball joint on track rod)
• Speakers are old and should probably be replaced
• Rear sunroof not working (big surprise there)
• Headliner needs replacing
• The clear coat is peeling just lightly on the front passenger fender. Otherwise, the paint is in fantastic condition with just a little fading on the roof (can't be seen unless you get on top of the truck).

Why am I selling?

Recently moved and can't keep all of my vehicles. Gotta let one go!
