Does the red goop indicate this case has been opened up and worked on?

This is a 1999 LC with 202,000 miles. Had a quick look today, it is at a dealer and they are asking 10,000. Interior is very clean, upholstery is great. Motor looks good, but the dealer has detailed it. The truck cranks up and idles fine, I didn't have time to drive it, 'tho.

Not neccessarily. While the FIPG you get from Toyota is black, the stuff Aisin uses on the T-Cases is red/orange or black.

I am just starting to look at these trucks and this one might be a good option(except it has the gold badging :) ). I am waiting on the dealership to call me with information on the previous owner and service records.
Does this look OK?

Regardless of age or mileage, the most important factor is how well it was maintained by the PO. If you are handy enough and enjoy doing your own wrenching then look for one that is a "good deal" first and has been "well maintained" second. Ideally, one that is both would be a good catch.

Personally, wrenching is sorta therapeutic for me, so I don't mind finding a vehicle that has been moderately neglected if the price is right.

Seems kinda high to me. But I'm a newbie.... I did an extensive search for mine, and found on CL a 98 LC100 with 116k, one owner, all service records and in great shape in and out; for $10,500. Had to fly from Santa Fe to PHX to go get it, but it was too good to pass up and has been great. I would widen the search.

At 202k it should be on it's 3rd timing belt, was that job done at 180k? The pic you posted is the steering rack, doesn't look to be leaking.

Inner small CV boot clamp appears to be seeping. That may (or may not) be what's on the tie rod/steering rack boot.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I called the used car manager at the dealership and asked if he could get the service records for me. He told me it was all on the carfax. I explained that the carfax comments like 'recommended maintenance performed' weren't enough for me to take a multiple thousand dollar chance on whether or not the timing belt was done on schedule, among other things. He told me that they used carfax for this information and that was what was available. I told him I was not planning to buy any used vehicle without decent records and I would be looking at other dealers. He didn't seem to care so I am passing on this truck.

Thanks again, I will be back to bother you all again if I can find a LC that will work for us.

FWIW, I bought a 99 100 last spring w/ 121K on it for $10K Only needed tires and some TLC. Just a data point for ya.
