1st Gen Xterra - Stock rack w/ Roof Top Tent (RTT)?

I'm wondering if the stock rack on a 1st Gen Xterra will support a RTT? I believe the weight limit says 100-150lbs or something like that.

If not, which rack should be installed?

This is on a 2000 Xterra. Thanks.

Nope the roof mounts are plastic and will give out or crack with a person jumping around on them.

Gobi or Bajarack sells the racks you need.

Calmini also offers one but it's lower quality.

I know a guy with a 2nd gen that has one on his factory rack.

I'm not sure if there is a big difference between the 1st and 2nd gen stock racks though.

FWIW, the US distributor of Autohome tents explained to me that you could use the factory rack with the addition of Thule crossbars (3 or 4) to spread the load out. Or, just ask the company of the tent you want to see what they recommend.

i have had my rtt tent on my stock bars for over a year now (stays on year round).... no issues, no cracks, no nothing... the rating is for the center bars.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. Although I do not like the Calmini rack do to the fact that it does not use the space above the drivers compartment, it is in fact very WELL made, and high quality. They did not cheep out on materials OR design. You can stand on it with no problem, and have even seen one take a pretty serious hit at the last obsticle (sorry, the name escapes me at the moment) of the Hells Revenge trail in Moab. Are they the best choice, maybe not, are they low quality, deffinatly not.

Good to know, I would not have though that. I broke mine with 3 shets of plywood up there. I will say I may have hit a large bump to do it, but I always thought it was a cool looking design, but not that practical.

I have the Gobi. Yes it is expensive, but it is really strong. I would recomend to anyone. I also like the looks of the Baja, but it was not availible when I was looking.

Cheers,

I used my ARB RTT on my 2000 Xterra. It has been on the truck since last May. I've spent about two straight weeks using it and I have not had any issues with the factory roof rack. My RTT opens towards the passenger side, so most of the weight is still on the rack.

I have the BajaRack and love it! Great design and very well thought about especially for only being a cost of around $550.00! It's remarkable what I have done with it and what I have loaded it with. I know the guys over at BajaRack recently made a rack for the FJ's with a section just for a RTT. Sergio is the owner and I imagine if you contacted him maybe he could look at making a RTT rack for other vehicles! Here's a pic I found when I googled it.
