I have built this truck for reliability and simplicity while also being able to be driven daily with use of the bed or towing capacity. Unlike when had a camper, we have never been questioned with parking anywhere. The tent pops up in less than a minute and with the solar, runs our Dometic fridge for endlessly in the southwest.
The truck:
2003 Dodge Ram 2500, 5.9 Liter Cummins Diesel, Pre-emissions
190,000 miles
I looked long and hard to find this truck. I was looking for a 2003-2004 dodge cummins because of the combination of new enough to be comfortable, quiet and have 4 doors while also having the simplest/most reliable components and best fuel mileage.
After I bought it, I took it to Plateau Diesel in Enumclaw WA and had them completely go through it and complete all maintenance items as well as upgrades. I have all the records.
2003-2004 Cummins have several advantages over the newer trucks:
-2 injection events (better fuel mileage and less injector issues)
-Better fuel mileage while also having easy access to increased power when wanted/needed
-Mechanical waste gate for turbo
-No Catalytic converter
-Better piston design
-No emissions equipment from the factory
-Much less picky on fuel if traveling to south america
Mechanical Upgrades: (work done between 2018-present)
-transmission rebuilt including 1/2 inch lines, and BD cooler and fan. 7000$
-Fass fuel system, including sump
-Yukon freespin front axle kit
-magtech rear differential cover
-bilstein shocks from Les schwab
-Toyo 285/70r17 load range E tires, 90% tread
-mishimoto aluminum radiator
-DPS exhaust manifold
-injectors replaced
-BD sway bar links
-S&B intake (with extra filter)
-BD transmission cooler
-banks exhaust brake
-edge tuner/monitor
-Redhead steering box
-Firestone Airbags on rear axle
-Brakes
-Driveshaft
Other Upgrades:
-Backup camera integrated into rear view mirror
-Kenwood stereo
-Cordura seat covers
-Weathertech mats
-Westin bed mat
-custom Protech box
-low profile highway products box
-tailgate slow lower kit
-Gemtop color matched canopy
-Heavy duty roof bars, (previous owner had a small boat he transported on them. Currently holding the rooftop tent.
-Columbus roof top tent
-200w solar panel
-Inverter
I have detailed records. Only looking to sell/trade because we just had a third child and would like more space and I prefer manual transmissions. Would love to trade for a Megacab manual transmission Cummins.
Zero rust. Excellent paint. Was garaged until last few months. Current mileage is 190,000 but looks and performs better than new. No expense has been spared maintaining and upgrading this truck.
Could also make a package deal with a 2020 look cargo trailer camper conversion.
