2003 Tacoma Manual Trans Grinding 4th (only)

I've been looking all over, and there seems to be conflicting information about what I'm dealing with.

I recently had a family friend change Trans, Transfer, and Diff oil. Everything was perfect for about a week, but now the trans is grinding as I go into 4th. It only grinds in 4th, which just seems really weird to me. There was no grinding in any gear prior to changing the fluids. I've seen conflicting information about using Hypoid vs Non-Hypoid oil in the MT. Has anyone dealt with this before, or have any advice on what to look for? Cheers.

what fluid did the friend use? Sounds like an issue with the synchros...

I'd start by draining the fluid and putting in 75-90 synthetic...

Since you didn't mention anything about grinding when putting the transmission into reverse (no synchronizer in reverse) it's probably not something like the clutch disk so ditto on the issue likely being with the 4th gear syncro... and on filling it with some high quality synthetic pronto to see if that saves you from having to do a transmission rebuild. On manual transmissions, the slicker, the better.

Best of luck.
