2003 Tacoma must have tools and spares?

For daily travel you wouldn't need much. Basic set of sockets/wrenches, pliers, crescet wrench, flat/pillips screwdrivers, and a wire brush. Even a basic multitool would take care of a lot. Spares I would keep fuses, oil, belt and maybe some bulbs. I bought a small set of tools at sears and just store it under or behind the rear seats.
Also a set of jumper cables is nice.

got a recommendation on the most common socket sizes for the Taco? On my fj60 it was prolly 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and 14mm (plus a 17mm for the diff plugs).
What about any weak links in the engine or drive train that can be taken care of with a simple replacement part? Sensors etc?
What about for extended travel, what do you guys consider must haves for long road trips?
Just FYI, this is the newest vehicle I have ever owned and I'm used to having to clean out my carb all the time, check miles of vac lines for cracks, bring vac line with me everywhere, constantly double check all the fricken emissions crap on there etc.

I had a tacoma for years and now a 4runner. I always carry the belts and some oil, but I've never needed a single thing...DaveM said:

I really can't think of anything. Just general tools. There are some more common wrenches like 12mm that are all over, but just bring a full set. Get a spare CV and or axle. That might be the most common thing I've heard break although its not likely to ever do it.
Buy the Axle socket. Its a big sucker. like 26mm or something. Not sure. You'll need to look that up or pull the front dust cover off the axle to see.

Short Trips - I keep a 24 piece (I think) ratchet set (it was like $20-25 at Sears), a hammer, cresent wrench, screw drivers and my faithful companion for 13 years who got me through some tough spots, my leatherman. Always a quart of oil.
Longer Trips, I go over everything the best I can (coolant/oil/brake fluid levels, spare tire, etc. etc.). On top of what is listed above, I carry some extra coolant, JB weld, sleeping bag, my Browning 10/22, extra clothes, and water.

The only spares I carry with my Taco's is a set of belts and a spare CV. Tools, welder, air, recovery are a staple regardless of the trip. My Cruiser on the other hand... I carry everything

The easiest, and slowest, way to figure out what tools a vehicle needs is to only use the tools in it's kit while working on it. Start with nothing. If you need a tool not in the kit, then add it. I keep vehicle specific tool kit in each vehicle. One less thing for me to drive off without.......
