2007 Taco tires

Hi guys/gals, this is a great site and I can't wait to start showing off my build. I just picked up a 2007 TACO double cab. I'm looking to build it up. I am scheduled to put a 2" OME lift on it later this month. I'm also scheduled to put new wheels and tires on the truck. Right now I am running stock 17" rims with 265/65R17's on it. I have been searching on here for the best tire size and have been torn between two sizes.

I'm going with BFG TA's I just can't decide on which size would be best. I see a lot of people running 265/75R16's and some running 255/85R16's. I would love to run the taller tire on my rig, I'm just not sure about rubbing. Do I need to add spacers to bring my 2" lift up to 3" to run the 255's?

Please someone help me before I spend money on tires.

I have the same suspension specs but have 16" wheels and I netted a wee bit more than 2" lift (no additional weight on rig yet). I wanted to stay with stock rims and pondered the best tire size for a long long time......I was very close to getting 235's and the GY Duratrac but in the end went with the Hankook ATM 265/75/16. On my rig, they tuck into the wheel wells, were much cheaper than the BFG AT's I've run for years and the reviews are quite good.

I don't have rubbing on my stock UCA's, or anywhere for that matter, but the tires are going to look a little bit small in the whell well until the suspension settles a bit. They still have the tall skinny look if that's what you're after.

I suggest you research beyond BFG just so you see what else is out there. I spent alot of time on TW and other forums where this issue is pounded to death before I finally made up my mind. Good luck, you'll love your truck a a lot more with the OME and new tires....I know I do :sombrero:

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I have been reading through hundreds of posts on here and it keeps going back and forth betweent he 255/85 and 265/85. I am pretty set on the BFG's. I would like to stuff the 255/85's under there but just don't want to throw down the money to find out they rub like hell. I'm not really into doing a lot of mods to the fender wells.

Anyone else?

I have 2.5 in lift with Kings in the front and OME in the rear. I've have the 255's since 04' and they only rub during a full turn and fully flexed but 99% of the time works the best on the taco. My .02c

Get the 255/85r16s

I just posted similar advice to a 4runner owner, but here is my take again.

I have the 255/85r16 Disco STs on my 2006 access cab TRD offroad.
I have a camper shell, carpet kit, slider/skid/bumper, and typically a bed full of supplies/equipment and toys on the roof.
In short, I run heavy. I have the stock TRD suspension, with the mudflaps removed, but no other wheel well chopping.

I am a geologist by profession, and nearly all my travel with this vehicle involves long highway distances followed by extensive (though generally not foolhardy) off-road travel...this truck has seen dirt in every state west of the Rockies, Baja, BC, and north-central Appalachia.

I have nearly worn out this set of tires, and yet throughout their life, I have not experienced noteworthy rubbing, neither before nor after armor installation. Sure, instants of rubbing occur when stuffing a tire during a turn at a ditch or a waterbar, but I have friends with 2nd gen tacomas with 3" lifts whose 285s rub far more than my unlifted 255s. I do not experience rubbing on the pavement/city driving.

I know there are folks on this forum (and other forums as well) who won't believe me, but I strongly feel that a lift is not necessary to adequately clear 255/85r16 Disco STs on a 2nd gen Taco. I will be buying a second set of 255 discos before I consider any sort of lift.

Gears are a different story. With 255s you will certainly notice a loss of power from stock tires, especially in 1st gear. But you will have a power loss of similar magnitude with 285s as well. Thus far, for me, re-gearing is not worth the expense.

my $0.02. Nothing more.

oh yeah

And though I am in the Eastern time zone now, I will be back in the Puget Sound (home base) with my truck around memorial day, if you want to take a ride to see for yourself. drop me a PM.

My 255s on my 05 with OME ripped of my mud flaps the the first time out. After that everything was good.

the flaps...

That is not too surprising about your mudflaps, I lost one in a sandy wash the first week I owned my truck, when I was running the stock rugged trails.
