Hi guys,
here is the anual trip report for 2009.
As mentioned elsewhere we had only 3 weeks this year to spent, starting in
Hesperia, CA our first day brought us up to Saline Valley where we stayed 2
days at the hot springs where we relaxed from the the long flight and the
last busy weeks at home.
Heading out via north pass we went east along US 6 and some smaller
byways to Canyonland area, fueling up in Hanksville - than out to Hans Flat
Ranger station where we got us a backcountry permit for the Maze. Before
we went down flint trail we took of for the Big Ridge and came nearly to the
tip where some rock slides blocked the one way we where driving but we
hiked up the rest and enjoyed the phantastic overlock.
Next day down flint trail and further on deep into the Maze where we camped
at the Dollhouse, we where the only ones there during the whole time, hiking
was limited as we had up to 110F but there is a lot worthwhile to be explored.
Leaving Maze via Poison Spring Canyon, crossing Dirty Devil River and hiting
pavement south of Hanksville from where we drove out to Horseshoe Canyon.
The hike down in the canyon and back was very hard at the high
temperature but the landscape and the petroglyphs made up for it.
Next station was Moab where we stayed 2 nights at the campground to get
a decent shower, doing laundry and made a short visit to Arch NP with a hike
to Delicate Arch and a nice 4WD trail up to Tower Arch.
After driving around a bit Chicken Corner/Hurrah Pass we got into Needels
and via Elephant Hill, Devils Pocket out of the Park, up Bobies Hole (difficult
uphill drive).
Using the ferry at Halls Crossing our drive took us through Capito Reef NP,
along Escalante to Kodachrome Basin SP. Then south through Grand
Staircase Escalante NM to Page and back west again to the Pacific coast
where we visited Joaquim Suave whose "meet`n greet` we had missed. Jack -
thanks again for the good time we had with Debbie and you!
From there our Bronco took us right back to Hesperia where we cleaned him
up and prepared him for next years vacation that will be hopefully a bit longer
again (8 or 9 weeks
)
bye, Werner
