2012 fuso 4x4 disc brake swap

My fuso came stock with drum brakes all around and Im rather unenthused about the whole setup.

Is there an established method to swap disc brakes onto these rigs?

Short answer... No.

I don't know for sure how all the variants around the world are configured, but here in Australia both Fuso and Isuzu still use 4 wheel drum brakes on their current model 4x4 light truck models (FG and NPS).
The 4x4 Hino is an exception, as it has disks. The Iveco Daly 4x4 has a front disc/rear drum brake set-up.

Many people complain about the stopping capability of the Fuso (or, its lack of it), but it is what it is.
Over the years various people have said they were going to do a conversion, but I have yet to see any example of this actually happening.
I don't know if it needs disks all round, but front disks would be nice.

If you have not already noticed, the drum setup on the Fuso is also especially bad at stopping the truck if it is going backwards. This is because of the asymmetric shoe setup.
Should you ever stall on a hill, the only real option you have is the handbrake, and that's not all that great either, but it can save you if applied quickly.

As I see it... your only real option, if you want disk brakes, is to swap out the axles.
Not a cheap option, but that's how EarthCruiser does their 4x2 to 4x4 conversions.

I've made custom disc brake kits for a number of vehicles. It's not all that complicated. You can easily order a custom rotor but then you need to order them again when it's time to replace them so it's best to find an off the shelf option that is readily available. Same for the caliper. If you're willing to bring me the truck, I can take care of you. I'm in Tennessee.

I had a good look at converting my FG to disk, very doable.
We have oodel`s ( technical term for heaps of them) brand new take off disk/caliper for the FUSO FE . Axles front and rear Disk to disk it was pretty easy to mock some simple stuff up. Both front and rear of the FE are dual caliper, they really stop.
A new hub would be needed to accept the FG spindle or Machine the FE Hub to accept the FG bearing and FWH assembly , I think there is enough meat there. Through boring of the hub might get tricky to get both bearing surfaces perfect, lots of smarter people than me know how to do that sort of thing.- 17 inch wheels would also be a must. The brake master is a off the shelf part nothing exciting there. FE uses heavier rear axle , it would easier to just change the entire assembly for four wheel disk is desired. I am not sure i will ever get the time to do it.IMG_4132.jpg

Thank you for the replies guys. I'm definitely looking for off-the-shelf parts to keep replaceability good. I was hoping I would be able to grab a different model fuso setup for the rear and things might go together with minimal issues. Designing wheels around the swap is fine.

The fronts I understand would be more of a b***h because this is the only use of the solid front axle that Mitsubishi has on a rig.
I was hoping someone might have gotten under their rig with a caliper and measuring tape to determine if any other model vehicles have a matched size setup. As far as knuckles and axles go, I figured we might strike a win with something more readily available for another type of HD truck

Sounds like nobodies having any luck. Why you gotta be like that Mitsubishi? Smh?‍?

I'll contact earthcruiser this week and perhaps they'll be able to divulge some of their past headaches that lead to their current setups.

I'm really bummed about this literal bump in the road. I have been experiencing braking issues with my fuso since I picked it up and while they seem to be somewhat normal for the vehicle, violent shaking while coming to a stop from a truck with only mildly worn ball joints or steering components signals an engineering flaw I'm not entirely sure I want to invest in solving. If the answer is swapping the axles out for something different I may end up abandoning this build and selecting a different chassis. Ive experienced every downfall of drum brakes imaginable and I'm not willing to build something on them.

I will update my findings as I find them. Smh
Changing the axles for some shaking brakes is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. The stock FG axles are extremely robust. If you do have worn ball joints or steering components they are cheap so get them replaced. Otherwise just have the drums turned. The brakes on these trucks last just about forever and get the job done well enough. Particularly if you use the exhaust brake.

Just came across this thread. I have a 2007 FG140 converted to overland truck which we travel Mexico winter months. I have started a new project using a 2012 FE160 Crew cab chassis. Have installed a 335 HP 6.0 liter and 4L80 auto transmission. Next step a FG140 front diff assembly and rear frame modification like the Acela built truck. As mentioned the FE has disc brakes front and rear and I will be converting the FG front diff to disc. Wondering if anyone has made any progress in this conversion? Thanks in advance. Guy
