2014 Power Wagon review

Why don't they have a diesel version by now?

The author states in the article:

"Inevitably, someone always wants a Cummins diesel-powered Power Wagon. The most common argument is for the increased torque off-road. There are several reasons why a Cummins Power Wagon is not feasible or even desirable. Ultimately, the new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 backed with 4.10 axle gears provides more than enough grunt to pull the big truck down the trail comfortably and reliably. The Cummins would simply be overkill in this situation and a hindrance in most other off-road scenarios."

Nice to have a truck aimed at the off-road market but I'll pass.

The Cummins would simply be overkill....

Overkill!? Is there such a thing!? ;) :D

When would a diesel be hindrance in off-road scenarios? All of our earth moving equipment was diesel, the military uses diesel, etc...

Most of the over-seas overland desirable vehicles are diesel.

it would cost ANOTHER $9000.00

That doesn't stop people who normally purchase diesels. Cost is relative.

Ram should at least have the option (imo)

Too bad they didn't get the 5.0 Cummins, be a nice assortment of engines to choose from.

I would of loved to add the power wagon stuff to my 3500 I just picked up. This is the best riding one ton truck I've ever been in and tows like a dream. The power wagon parts I now have to add:/

I'm also averaging 22mpg hwy! Love diesels.

My recollection is that the factory winch won't fit with the the longer Cummins

Easy fix...winch bumper.

AEV has a factory looking solution.

It is also a that the diesel is very heavy. Some are okay with wheeling a heavy truck but it not really something you want. But more importantly it the front axle articulation without lifting the truck a half a foot in the air.

I had one of the first New Power Wagons. GREAT TRUCK off road but sucked fuel like a 747 cargo jet on take off. I believe I averaged (highway) 14 MPG after I installed my 35" tires. That and the light cargo weight capacity (closer to a 1/2 ton) made me sell mine. I was towing snowcats and needed a 1 ton. Anyway an excellent off road capable vehicle. If you pack light and get the 3.73 optional gear ratio AND install the front selectable hubs (after market) you should be in the 16 to 17 MPG range or so.

I'll throw in my 2 cents. Always liked the PWs, they're ginormous though. While still very capable, a half-ton sized version would be easier to live with on a day to day basis. Even the new half ton trucks of today seem bigger/bulkier than the 3/4 ton trucks of the mid to late 90s.

Diesel this, diesel that, blah, blah, blah…. Personally I am glad the Power Wagon doesn’t have a diesel or it would not be on my radar of the main vehicle I want so badly. There isn’t a 2007 or newer diesel engine in any vehicle worth owning. The good diesels are a thing of the past and I'm not so sure how "good" they really were.

Story in today’s auto news…. Why Ram's Biggest, Baddest Off-Road Pickup Won't Get A Diesel Engine
