2015 - 2018 Tacoma Build Parts List

Hello all,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I am planning a 1-2 year overland trip starting in 2022. At this point, I've set a budget and decided on my vehicle = 2015 -2018 Tacoma (all models) and my camper = 4 wheel hawk front dinette. Likely going to make the truck purchase before the end of the year and my current approach is to find a bone stock Tacoma, hopefully also with low miles and do the build myself.

Hoping you guys could share bill of materials/parts list for similar builds. While all recommendations are welcome, my main focus is on the drive train, wheels/tires, and suspension. I've budgets 10-12k in upgrades for a final product that can comfortably handle the weight of the slide in (~1,300 pounds) through mostly moderate and the occasional advance trails/roads. Also, one thing to consider is that I'll be driving through the US and central america and covering a lot of distance,so a decent highway set up is also a must.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a great trip you are planning. I don't have a Tacoma, but I am pretty sure the Hawk is for full-size trucks only, so you will need to pick a different model of camper. I could be wrong though. Stay safe and enjoy!

You can do a Fleet with tray on the Tacoma. The Hawk would work on a Tundra or other full size. I cant remember the gents name on here but he is traveling the world with a Tacoma and flat bed fleet camper.

Good call guys thanks for the heads up.

I looked at 4 wheels website and found the fitment recommendations.
TOYOTAModelCab Style / Bed StyleRecommended Camper
2005-currentTacoma73.5" Composite BedFleet or Swift
2005-currentTacoma60.3" Composite BedSwift
1995-2004TacomaStandard Cab + Access Cab with 6' BedFleet or Swift
1995-2004TacomaCrew Cab with 5' BedSwift

Regarding non-4 wheel options I've heard the following are good Tacoma options (thoughts?):
  • Kimbo 6
  • All-Terrain Camper Bobcat
  • EarthCruiser GZL 300

I can't speak to the above models, but I've been really pleased with the Alu-Cab Khaya.

@rino Rin at OK4WD will have many details on appropriate builds for the Tacoma and I highly recommend OK4WD.. If you have any specific questions on my build, I have a link in my signature to my truck build and Khaya build. I'm also available to answer any specific questions you might have.. Just let me know if you need help.

best,

John~
