A little back story on “Wuhan: The Pandemic Project”

It’s March of 2020 and I’ve just finished building “Domino”, a first gen Tundra. A good friend of mine that lives on the east coast has some time off work, so he and I plan to meet in Texas to spend a week or so cruising around Big Bend National Park. We are in the farthest reaches of the park w/o cell coverage for a few days, having a blast, place pretty much to ourselves. We decide we should head towards the closest ranger station to top up our scepters and touchbase with our wives and he needed to check in with his employer.

“Zombie Apocalypse has Started” is what I see on both my phone and iPad the moment we get cell coverage. We get to the ranger station and realize this “Covid” thing is real and now on our continent. My wife tells me in our first phone call in days, certain states are considering closing their state line and I should probably start heading north. My friend is a Corpsman for a Tier1 Unit and his employer had very little to say about the situation at that moment. We loaded up on toilet paper and snacks at the little convenience store that was part of the station and said our goodbyes not knowing if we’d be able to get out of TX.

Needless to say, we both make it home to opposite sides of the country without issue. The Tundra was awesome and performed flawlessly.

The four pack of toilet paper sits on a shelf in my garage as a token of that great adventure.

I was thrilled with the Tundra I had put together. It performed flawlessly from MT to TX and back again. And then I wrecked it when I hit some black ice on Easter morning! Hit the K rail with both ends. The ARB bumper absolutely protected the vitals from damage, but in turn bent the frame rails a couple inches. Totaled. What’s next? Do I build another Toyota or go in a different direction? 80 series in the driveway, and an FJ Cruiser, I sold my FJ40 years prior…

Time to try a domestic truck. Welcome to the family “Wuhan”! This truck just seemed to check all our boxes for our next adventure rig. Supercrew cab was a deluxe apartment compared to the FJ and Tundra, it’s only my wife and I and two sub 15# doggos. Two turbos and a factory locker, short bed just long enough for us to sleep in, and I’d have a hard time finding a mechanic who is not familiar w/a F-150 in the Americas. And, still under warranty.

We spent a couple weekends building drawers in the back to our spec. Some really great products on the market, but none of them met our needs. The ds is a “kitchen” drawer with a stove platform designed loosely around our Cook Partner two burner stove. Utensil or whatever drawer under it. The rest of the space held cookware, plates/bowls, collapsible sink, some of our dry food. The ps drawer holds everything else not kitchen/food related. It was designed to be wide enough for our assembled Kermit chairs and our PETT toilet, etc. We also wanted cubbies fore and aft of the wheel well for our stuff and things. I utilized the rear ps cubbie to house our compressor since I was already planning to run 12v power to that corner of the bed and wanted the 2lbs air tank on the ps frame rail. The 12v goose neck lights we added with USB chargers made “living” in the topper that much better. Now with the James Baroud on top, it makes for a good chill spot out of the elements w/o climbing a ladder…the doggos love it.

The cab is really comfortable and the stock sound system is impressive. Adding the Goose Gear 60% seat delete made it an even better vehicle to travel in and live out of. It is enough storage for all of the tools and repair items we would carry including all but the beam of our Hi Lift jack. The other section held my fowl weather gear, PPE, etc. I’d often use a Zarges box secured on top of that to hold my camera gear. I used parts from Engel’s fridge mount to secure the Engel 45 to the GG system. The molle boards on the back of both front seats are also one of those items you second guess initially and then realize their true value. The ps board had wto bags attached to it. The top one was our coffee kit and the bottom was the K9 bag with all of their stuff except food/treats. I’ve sat in the jump seat with my laptop on the fridge and gotten work done when it was crappy outside at camp.

We never put a winch on the truck and hoped that choice wouldn’t come back to haunt us one day. It has not! Aired down, low gear, locker engaged, no issues. If that didn’t do it, the two pairs of Maxtrax and a spade (or my snow shovel while in MT) certainly did. Plenty of lighting for the conditions we put ourselves in, although I pondered putting some form of chase light on the rear of the topper at some point. With the Icon/Deaver combination, this truck is just as happy at 75 on road or off. (It may or may not have been “tested“ at higher speeds).

We’ve really been pleased with this truck and we will miss it. We decided to sell it to try out #vanlife# and buy a Sprinter.

Please reach out with any and all questions. All reasonable offers will be considered. Thank you
