The newer diesels just start when there ready. You press the start button, after a delay and the glow plugs are warm enough it fires. What you are describing is not a block heater just a light to tell you when the glow plugs have heated up.
A block heater you have to plug into an outlet on house and it preheats the engine oil for easier starts.
