4Runner with steering wheel shake?

I just took a 1998 4Runner 4x4 3.4L for a test drive and on the highway (above 100km/h) it has a shake in the steering wheel. It had stock sized tires and no suspension modifications. Any ideas about what it could be and how difficult it will be to fix? Do the 3rd gens have a quirk about this that bothers a lot of owners?

My 96 certainly has a shake, about 50mph (100k?) and up. At this point I'm thinking a warped rotor, although the shake appears to be independent of the brakes. I figure one thing at a time - if the rotor doesn't fix the problem, well it needs to be resolved anyway and then I'll look for something else.

On the good side, 202k miles and nothing else mechanical wrong with it, so to answer your question - it doesn't really bother me.

-tire out of balance
-worn shocks
-since you said stock suspension/stock sized tires then it's probably not caster angle change due to a lift
-if it's a warped rotor, your steering wheels shakes during braking, generally not shaking when just driving

My 99 had the same shake with stock rims and unevenly worn tires when I bought it (125k). I replaced the tires and rims and the shake was gone. Look for uneven wear and see how much play is in the steering rack. Might need tie rods replaced or just replace the worn out rubber bushings with the polyurethane ones sold by wheelersoffroad.

My 1993 had a bad shake. Cheapest fix was having tires balanced. Free actually at my tire store, Tucker Tires in Covina Ca. Problem solved. Hope that is all it is for you. Got to save $where we can these days.
