4x4 Conversion plans

Has anyone done a do it yourself conversion on a newer (2000+) Chevy van? I have a 2001 Custom Hightop van. It's a great van and we use it for camping and other activities. I would like to convert it to 4x4 to get a little farther off the beaten path. I've taked to a couple companies, but no one that I can find offers a kit for anything newer than 1996. One company does conversions of newer vans in house but they charge about double my budget. I've wondered how different the frame of a 2500 truck is and if the body of the van could be moved to moved onto a truck chassis or if I could move the front suspension, axles, transmission and transfer case to the van. I have a complete shop with a lift, welders, torches ect available. I'm just trying to figure out what approach to the project is best.

And before you ask, the reason I don't have a 4x4 or AWD to begin with is because this paticular van was a hand me down. My parents bought a brand new van becuase this one stopped running. It was sitting in there yard and they told me I couold have it if I got it running. I fixed it up over a week and we have been using it regularly for about 2 years. It's been driven from Coast to Coast 3 times. I don't want to go too extreme with it. I just want to be able to have 4x4 and fit some 32x12.5 tires under it. I would like to be able to use it on most of the Trans-American Trail.

I'm not sure there is much in common between the pickups and vans. The small components are probably shared but overall I'm going to guess the chassis/suspension geometry to be rather different.
If I were to try and do what you want to accomplish I would find a wrecked AWD GM van and swap your body onto that chassis. I've read with no real proof that the AWD avalanche shares running gear with the vans so that may be another avenue for parts.

Hmmm. Thanks. I'll have to look into that. Maybe get the front clip from the AWD van and us an electronic transfer case from an H2 instead of the vans AWD transfer case.

As far as the Chevy trucks go, they are still body on frame. The vans have the unibody design and that's why they're harder to convert. Much more custom fab work is needed to convert the Chevy vans so there is no bolt-on kit available and they don't share many parts with the trucks. You can research how Quigley (http://quigley4x4.com/tabid/73/Default.aspx) and Clydesdale (http://www.sportsman4x4.com/clydesdale/) do their Chevy conversions to see if you can get some info on what all it takes to make it happen. And I don't know much about the AWD's except that they've only been available on the 1/2 ton models, but maybe there's some options there. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Thanks. Thats mainly the issue I was having. I was trying to find good information on what was involved in the project. I was just not having any luck on finding information on the newer vehicles. All the info and write ups I could find were about the Pre-1996 models.

Quigley has built both "Traditional Quigley" Chevy conversions with straight axles and IFS systems using mostly K-Series Truck components.

I would opt for the straight axle. No suspension travel in the IFS...

Here are one of each that I have spent some time under:

Dana 60 straight axle:

There are some GM AWD 3/4 tons (2500) out there, not just half-tons (1500). The GM vans are not of unibody construction but rather body-on-frame. The different suspensions available for the vans are a solid/live axle and IFS (independent FRONT suspension), not IRS (independent rear suspension).

Nothing to add, these are just corrections.

That's funny - too many years racing IRS vehicles and had it stuck in my head. Correct IFS...

Thanks all. I was aware for the frame stuff. I've had the van on the lift enough times to know it had a full frame. I just didn't know how it compared to the truck frames. I'm thinking IFS woould probably involve less chopping of the frame then a solid axle. Though IFS would probably cost me more. I'm not too worried about wheel travel. I'm not looking at doing anything a stock 4x4 truck or SUV couldn't handle. I'm also not looking to raise the ride hieght too excesively. Maybe 4 or 5 inches above the factory 2wd hieght of the van. It will be used mostly on logging trails, powerline service roads and sand. Love the look of the red IFS van. Mine is a hightop conversion. Lifting it too much will just add to the already high center of gravity.
