How much are you planning on putting in your trailer? Will it be a lot of relatively light but bulky stuff (like sleeping bags)? Are you going to have stuff in containers (like Rubermaid Action Packers)?

Think cubic feet (volume: length x width x height). You don't want to go to all the work to make a custom trailer just to find out you don't have enough volume inside.

On my trailer, I knew I wanted to be able to stack 8-gallon Action Packers on top of each other. They are about 12" tall. So I needed to make sure my trailer tub was at least 24" tall. I went with 27" (from the floor of the tub to the top of the tub's lip measured with the lid open).

Don't be afraid to go a few inches taller. You will be glad you did.

After having fiddled with many trailers over the years I believe the best tub dimensions for an off road trailer follow step side pickup truck bed measurements: 49-50" wide, 78" long and 18" high with a tailgate. If I were to ever commission a custom reproduction of a M100 or M416 that's the tub floor dimensions I would be after. It's short enough to still be nimble off road, has good cube out space and most importantly can carry a standard 4x8 load flat on the floor with the tailgate down. That's not too tall for reach over loading even with tall tires but can carry Jerry cans or 20 lb propane tanks under a low lid or tarp. The additional width also helps you get your track width to match modern vehicles that are so much wider than the vintage Jeeps the narrow original trailers were meant to follow.

Those extra few inches over 4x6 can surprisingly make a world of difference. I wish mine was that size.

my current "4x6" build is 23" tall, outside dimensions. It's actually 6' by 50", so inside dimension is 5' 10" x 4'. It's sitting spring over on 235/85r16 tires (31.7" tall) it's the perfect height where I can still reach over into it, without being too short for the gear I'll be carrying. That's the biggest thing to keep in mind. will your gear fit how you want it.

Mine is 49 inside just to be able to carry lumber etc.Two issues im also having are the tailgate and lid. While i want a swing away gate with shelf it would be nice to have a drop down gate for when i haul longer items. The lid would be awesome but like a camper shell its also a pain sometimes,im thinking for my use that leaving it open most of the time and using camping totes might be a better option, this trailer will get equal use camping, hauling 2-3 kayaks and running to lowes.
All suggestions appreciated!

My original plan was a side flip open top but changed it up and went 30” sides and doors, liked the idea of our camping gear being secure and out of the weather. Was also concerned in how heavy a lid could be with an RTT or kayaks on top 7FDDE9A6-76E5-472D-81BB-69AF54F0D2AD.jpeg

What do all think about a setup like this on a trailer,im really thinking about leaving trailer open but i need to haul a few kayaks.I know i could make some square tubes that slide into one another but this seems way cleaner,i found one for 375 and there normally 800.

Just finished my trailer. Dimensions are 4x6 box and 24” high walls. It’s sitting on 31” tires. I’m 6’ tall and I don’t have any issues reaching over and touching the floor. I measured my gear totes and other stuff stacked. 24” was the best option for me , plus you utilize all the sheet metal etc without waste.
