80 gear security

The Cruiser is pretty open in the back: third row gone (for sale, btw) and the drivers side rear seat is also out. The idea is to have plenty of room for the new pup and gear. There is usually one covered box stuffed with emergency gear stowed in the truck at all times. What I'm after is a lock box that can be bolted to the floor and large enough to hold a MacBook and other bits. There have been more than a few cars broken into at trailheads recently. That fact and no means of securing gear for an impromptu hike is nixing a lot of fun.

What are you using to lockdown valuables?

I currently don't have a good lockable storage setup in my 80 but had been considering it. Security had never been a concern in the past but over the years, adding more and more valuable to the rig has started to make me wonder. Wonder if I needed to consider security or stop bringing so many valuable items and go back to basics! haha:sombrero:

I may have missed this somewhere but what are you doing for sleeping accomodations? I can't remember if you were doing an RTT or not. If not, you could double up the storage compartment with a nice sleeping platform. With the front passenger seat adjusted to a comfortable position you have exactly 6 feet from the back of the seat to the rear hatch on an 80. I built a sleeping platform that allows me to stow gear under it and still have more than half of the width of the rear truck free for anything else like bikes or even installing seats. It works pretty well for my needs and I prefer sleeping in the rig when travelling solo. Just something to think about. I think you could do it in a modular fashion so that you could remove the front portion and resintall the second row passenger seat as well when needed. Could be slick.

Back when I did my basic storage for my LC, I search for a solution and didn't find anything, or maybe didn't search hard enough. I ended up installing an alarm before I went on my 3 week mexico trip to the mainland. An alarm with sensitive sensors will help and the storage compartment will keep tools and other cruiser crap hidden from the lookie loos.

it's always difficult to find a perfect "off the shelf" solution. I needed the same thing in my truck -- a place to stash/lock up valuables and tools (as well as a secure box to keep everything tidy and contained incase of a roll-over). I pulled out a back seat and had a box made at a local shipping case manufacturer and a base fabbed up that it bolts to. They can make it any color/size/shape and they are really strong/sturdy. I have maybe $350 in it including the base and it fits perfect.

How about a low key approach? Many years ago I was advised not to have tinted windows and leave shades open so thieves could quickly glance in and see there was nothing to steal.

So the trick is the appearance of nothing of value. How about a low profile drawer or raised bed with a covert hatch. Maybe 5" high should be enough to stow the laptop and such. Cover with a carpet and it will look like the back is empty.
