*** i posted in the samba group site but also would like to see if anny of you portal members might have items for sale on my shopping list....
I would like to introduce myself as a 85 Westfalia owner that is being built up from Affordable German in Phoenix.
I have a 07 Jeep Rubicon and was going to put a flip top on it with the back end for the fridge and stove but prices from Adventure Trailer have greatly risen and to deck my Jeep out would have got the price up to 20k.
In the past I have had a Pinzgauer and had the idea that I might soon get a Volvo C-303. In some ways a Westfalia had that box look and if I was going to pay to upgrade my Jeep I might of spent it on a camper.
A few months ago I had started my search. Most posters on Craigslist , Samba and other “for sale” sites have led to stories why they had the best deal. BOY! If I could get rid of one word that many of the sellers would use- DO NOT LOW BALL ME… or they know what price of a Westy should be by comparing other sales or GoWesty as dollar marker.
I met Bill from Affordable German when I started my search. I went to his business to take some measurements and pictures of some vans. Last week I decided to revisit him to get some advice and told him my search was leading nowhere. He walked me into his yard and pointed to a Westy that he was going to build up.
He said that a Subaru 2.5 was going in and the transmission was getting rebuilt with limited slip. Other new items and replacements were front\rear GW bumpers, running lights, 4 headlight grill. 2 new batteries. The inside cushions were going to an upholster. It will have the awning and canvas\tent were new. We have a finish date in 6 weeks and will test everything from bumper to bumper. It will have a year warranty on the drive train, wiring harness and engine. So instead of chasing a dream he is building me one! Pretty much the same price of the average craigslist seller and a partial warranty.
I am replacing the rims with the van café (European Look) and tires will be come from Discount Tire (Yokohama Geolander).
I wanted to Jeep flame red paint job but that was a couple grand so I might just get the same color flashed over for 1k. I am pondering a wrap and this would help me push desert tours and adventures.
Bill has an amazing syncro and he has almost got me sold on a Fox set up. This will see some trail use for photo tours and such…. I have Old Man Emu on my Jeep and it’s a soft ride…. Hate to be a sheeple as many of the Jeep folks went to Fox overnight…
Some things I am looking for…
I have not bought the rims and tires yet so if anyone has a set of 4/5 - prefer 15/16 inch rim with the offroad look… no need for street tires.
I do have a solar panel but I am looking for everything in between.
I thought the seats in the Westys had arm rest??? Will be looking for a set as well.
I have to redo the rubbers in the windows and if anyone has some extra would need that in my basket.
I have searched almost every web site that caterers to the van and have yet to find inside panels…. Anyone have a link to any????
If everything works out as planned we will be going from Phoenix up the 15 to Pendleton and Walla Wallla.. ..down to Bend and head to the bay area and down the coast to L.A. and home in mid may…. With 2 dogs.
I appreciate any feedback and hope to meet up with many of you – any sale items feel free to email at desertmagazine@hotmail.com
