98 cruiser

Hello, I am looking at a 98 LC with 220k miles. They are asking $6k. From the photos it looks pretty clean inside and out. Thoughts on price? Is the rear locker an option or standard for this? Looking to down size from my tundra to pay for tuition (fun, fun). Thanks

Price isn't too bad if the truck isn't a rust bucket and hasn't been banged up in the past. At that mileage, expect to spend some coin towards baseline maintenance and preventative maintenance. on '98 and '99 LC's, the rear locker was standard.

Thanks, will take a closer look and have a mechanic inspect, so there are no huge surprises. Appreciate the info, I am trying to get a feel for the LC market after years in the tundra's.

The rear locker was not standard. Look for the dial. There are only two downsides to the 98--no rear AC and a relatively weak front diff.

Listen for the master cylinder electric pump running as well. Incidences of complete brake failure are rare, but there is some indication that excessive pump activity could be a marker for impending failure.

Most 98 and 99 came with 2XL. Hear of but never seen the poverty package version with no lockers and cloth.

6K is decent price, even more so if good maintenance records. @ 220K mile you are looking at a few major PM items (if not already done in the past 80K miles): serpentine belt swap, starter (under the intake), F/R dif rebuild, and front carrier upgrade to 4 spider gears. W/o a doubt a less costly truck to sort than a 97 FZJ80 with similar miles

A 97 FZJ80 will need a front end service, "maybe" a head gasket, and "maybe" starter contacts. They are different rigs with different advantages and disadvantages but a well(or poorly) maintained 80 is no more or less expensive to sort out than a similarly maintained 100.
