A couple of questions for Flippac owners...

I have a new to me Flippac.

Is there a concern with drilling holes in the back side to install a pair of aircraft luggage tie downs so I can use my Kelty tarp? It would be 4 small holes and through bolted.

I have a small rust stain from one of the hinges, I plan to clean off the old chalking, and reapply, is there a preferred brand of chalk? Do you do anything to help protect the hinge? ie spray it with WD40 and then re-chalk or even something like "frame saver" a bicycle product made to protect steel frames?

Thanks

I drilled thru the topper to install my awning and have had no problems (yet). YMMV I know that others have installed back-up (reverse) lights by drilling thru the topper with no apparent bad ju-ju.

Drilling through the rear wall panel above the hatch back shouldn't be a problem. You will be drilling into a cavity so you'll have to attach to it using an insert or pop rivets. Make sure you seal the area with silicon or neoprene to avoid water entering the cavity.

The rust you are seeing around the hinges is most probably coming from the torsion bar. The torsion bar is heat treated steel so it rusts, nothing that can be done about that. The sleeve that covers the torsion bar varies from unit vary in length, some are loose and some tight. The tight fitting ones can trap water inside them so it's best to drill a couple of weep holes in the sleeve to allow for drainage.

The hinge area does need to be siliconed. Remove any old loose silicon refill the area and make sure you seal from the hinge to the shell. Apply the silicon with the lid closed and the open. Open and close applies different strains to the hinge and opens up different areas that need to be sealed. Use a good outdoor rated silicon.

The area around the hinge needs to be checked and siliconed on a regular basis, at least every six months.

Happened t notice that all your windows were closed when opening the top. It goes a little easier if you open a window or the hatch...

thanks I will try that next. do these things come with an owners manual?

Yeah, ask us owners here. Feel free to PM or email me any time. Happy to share with you my experience. Welcome to the FP tribe.

Also, this thread might do better in the Pop Up Campers section. Maybe a mod will move it...
